Further Dooce Tweaks

Just so you know, you need to refresh your cache when visiting dooce.com.

I had relied on a whole lot of CSS flim-flammery to get just the right combination of fonts and styles for the comments. After it not working on every browser, and realizing that I was being dumb. I fixed her comments using an ordered list. I know many people are probably saying, “no shit, Sherlock” right about now, but I’ve had a few other things on my mind. Also, Heather wanted about four different unique styles and sizes in the comments area.

So. I cleaned up the CSS (used a container div with an ol and an li definition for that div), made Heather happy and made it so that no matter what browser you use, the comments are correctly indented. Ah, the joys of anality. And the joys of CSS.

P.S. We still haven’t made her site generate dynamic pages yet. Once all the plug-ins are done, we’ll definitely be going dynamic, for more than just Movable Type rebuilds only.

P.S.S. Scheduling posts to go live at some future time is very sweet. Not that my life depends on this feature, but one day, on another site, it might.

P.S.S.S. My wife is obdurate with the singing of Mormon hymns to Leta at random times and doing so quite loudly.

Thank god I am in California…Does she play air-trumpet?

I didn’t understand one word of the technical part of your post. Ah, how I wish I was a computer geek and could build a cool site like yours & Heather’s.

  • Anne A.

OK. I admit it, I’m a huge dummy when it comes to computers. But, Dooce has comments? Where? Where?

  • http://spankyourcat.blogspot.com/ Christi Lee

Dooce has comments on her photo page. Cool.. huh? If you can get a word in. LOL

i had an easier time understanding italian. but damn, it sounds cool.

I know this has been brought up before…but can you get the pictures to work on Dooce? I don’t know why it is the only site on the internet where I don’t see the pictures, or the masthead or any graphic at all, I see yours fine. I actually saw them on a friends laptop once, and the pics are really cute! So I know some people can view them (most people?) but I haven’t been able too for months and months. I have just your standard Windows XP and explorer 6.0. I’ve looked at all my permissions and antivirus stuff. Don’t have a clue why my Dooce is picture-less. Just checking.

“COME COME YE SAAAAINTS… NO TOILET PAPER HEEEERE…”

    Er, wrong version. Sorry. :-D

  • http://www.blurbomat.com Natalie

I don’t get any graphics or photos either!! I used to, and then one day it just stopped. What gives, Armstrong?

If you can’t see pictures you are most likely behind a firewall. I have to disable my firewall and then I can see the pictures on her site (and others) just fine. Try it! :)

Are you doing this on purpose? The titles of today’s posts on Dooce’s and your sites today made me think of “I Shot the Sheriff” and “Little Deuce Coupe”. Now I can’t get them out of my head.

I like the way you get two earplug ads on this page, just because you mentioned ‘plug-ins’ and ‘loudly’!

  • Kim

I’m behind a firewall (router) and have always seen photos just fine – so there. LOL! Still lovin your sites. And I, too, understood almost nothing of this entry. Not even quite certain what “obdurate” means. Maybe you should like that word to dictionary.com? Or am I the only illiterate one here?

After I upgraded to XP, I was having the same problems with loading pictures. THis worked for me. You might want to try it too. If you are using Norton Internet Security, click on ‘Privacy Control’, then click on ‘Custom Level’, then make sure the box beside ‘Enable Browser Privacy’ is NOT checked. You might have to reboot after. Hope this helps.

I use Firefox and it has some issues with the CSS. I am sitting here trying to work out why, but my brain isn’t helping today. Your ‘outer’ div seems to be rendering last and sometimes not at all until I scroll the page.

    BTW re image problem: http://www.dooce.com/archives/daily/02_26_2004.html

I’ve seen that before with Firefox. I think, but I’m not certain, that it is a caching issue. If you refresh the page, it should redraw. Very strange. It might be how I’ve done the code.

    Anybody have any ideas?

If you can’t see images, it’s most likely due to either a firewall/security setting on your local machine or your connection speed. Some people on dialup have a hard time with the images.

  • http://spankyourcat.blogspot.com/ Christi Lee

I can see them from this computer, but when I go to my boyfriends house I can’t on his computer. He thinks that it is the firewall too. Oh well.

  • http://www.blurbomat.com Natasha

I can see them both from my home machine (dial-up and McAfee firewall) and also from my former work machine (network computer with DSL connection). No idea.

Best we could come up with was to lose the outer div altogether and put a background image on the container div which includes the mid grey vertical lines, as the site is fixed width anyway.

And yes, reload and it fixes itself, and also scroll and it fixes itself. If the page is cached then I just get a slight delay as the outer div renders last – and then only on the photos page.

    Hope that helps.

    Dear Blurbomat,
I am sorry there are so many idiots posting to this string. You told them. They didn’t even read it.
    …Firewall…
And these are the people voting Bush back into office because he caught Sadam Hussain – you know, the guy 42% of the public think is responsible for 9-11

obdurate, good word. I had to look it up.

Anything beyond CSS1 can only be for martyrs or the anal. I’ll wait til the browser folks get all caught up.

Still, gotta recognize talent and perseverance. Great job.

p.s. it’s P.P.S. when you’re adding postscripts (your anal side would want to know)

You can’t say something adorable like “you must refresh your cache” and then not explain it for the rest of us. We can’t answer the Jeopardy questions at all, let alone drunk. When you tell me to refresh my cache, I get visions of empty canteens in the desert. Please help us. Or, in the form of a question, What does refresh your cache mean, Alex?

I just came across a link to your wifes site via Mr. Zeldman.

Love the writing and love the photos. Particularly your other half. No holds barred and straight from the hip. Fuckin’ A. If this doesn’t inspire MY significantly better half to let me build her site I don’t know what will.

Good job. Keep it up ; )
