I’m only partially joking

It is a strange day when you realize that both Huey Lewis and his News were onto something with the whole hip/square deal.

  • Jenny

I think they were/are the kind of square that can never be hip. Not that they didn’t have the right idea. It was just never in the cards for them.

  • Louis

Found myself in the car the other day enjoying the hell out of a Huey song. Kind of scary. Kind of fun. Kept it to myself. Defintely hip to be square in 2004. he was way ahead of his time.

No, no. It’s not the Huey, or the News. It’s the words. The words, people. Of the song.

they did a version of that song for “sesame street” called “it’s hip to be a square”. nothing in the world more hip or square or just plain cool than being on sesame street.

My design for life in a nut shell. I’m more rectangular — oh no… i’m definately square!

when i was a kid i thought he was saying “hit the B square”.

  • Alek

Sadly, I use a quote from one of their songs for the subtitle of my journal: grease monkey, ex-junkie, winner of the fight. Which pretty much describes my life.…

I finally got around to ripping all my CDs for my iPod and was slightly embarrassed to find how many Huey CDs I had. Oh well.

Re. Sesame Street: If you’ve never seen the R.E.M. episode with “Shiny Happy Monsters”, you’ve never lived. It’s really brilliant. Be sure that Leta sees it someday.

Geekiness, dorkiness, and SQUAREness are all pretty damn sexy.

I realized Huey Lewis was cool after I watched the movie “American Psycho”.

  • HazelEyedPisces

It is, indeed, hip. Really puts a sexy spin on becoming a responsible adult.

How many times am I driving down the road…and suddenly realize I am humming/driving/or walking to a Huey classic. I want a new drug is often the chosen song. I wonder what that says about me? I will not inevitably bop along to Hip to be Square for the rest of my work day.

As time goes on, I’m starting to believe that the converse of Huey’s contention is true: it’s square to be hip.

And while we’re on the subject of rock stars on Sesame Street, there has been a recent run on awesome performances (I have a four-year-old and a one-year-old, plus a healthy crush on Gabbie). Norah Jones (“Don’t Know Why Y Didn’t Call”) and Diana Krall (“Everybody’s Song”) were great.

aye, matey. but then again, they were kind of off about the heart of rock n’ roll still beating. i mean, have you watched Mtv lately? even U2 is recycling the same song over and over again (specifically, everything i’ve heard from them for the past several years sounds to me *exactly* like that “elevation” song they did a few years back for the tomb raider soundtrack).

if the heart of rock n’ roll is still beating, its on life support. bah humbug.

R.E.M. singing “Furry Happy Monsters” on Sesame Street is amazing!

I’m so un-hip it’s a wonder my bum doesn’t fall off.* Does that make me a cube?

I do love the REM monster group thing, but my favorite song memory from Sesame Street circa late 70’s was the Beetles singing “LetterB.” Get it? Let it Be! It was amazing. I actually sang it for my 10th graders today after singing them the ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ song by Big Bird.
