Training

All weekend long we’ve been watching the Dog Whisperer (blog), possibly driving the houseguest and the Tivo hard drive crazy. When we lived in Los Angeles, we had a trainer come to us. Just like Cesar, our trainer spent a little time doing stuff with Chuck, but he spent most of his time training me and Heather. Watching the same basic scenario play out again and again, we’ve redoubled our Chuck efforts. And it’s paying off. Our walks have been delightful. I think Leta feels a difference as well.

Plus, Heather and I love taking turns with the leash.

Great article about the Dog Whisperer in the New Yorker a couple of weeks ago.

  • Michelle~in~Memphis.…ugh

I’ve got a spastic little weenie dog over here. Wanna come help?

You guys are perfect pet parents and perfect people parents. I’m jealous!

Not to add to your Tivo burden, but if you can find the South Park episode where Cesar Milan comes & trains Cartman? Tssst! is the title… it’s an homage to Cesar & quite possibly one of the funniest episodes, EVER. When Cartman wears himself out on the leash? Or goes submissive with an eye roll back to docility? Well, it just speaks volumes to the discipline required to rear any young mammal.… Most of the discipline must reside with the parents/pet owners. Happy training…

Hey! I love my trainer! It’s amazing what he can do…and now what we can do. What was your trainer’s name? Wouldn’t that be funny if we used the same one? Brandon Fouche is who we used. Check out his website. Lots of cool stuff there:

We are teaching Gabby to do agility stuff.…the husband taught her to jump through a hula hoop this weekend. So cool!

I’ve been Tivo-ing the shit out of it all weekend, too, and for chrissake, I need to know which episode helped with the walks, because THE PULLING. THE NEVERENDING PULLING OF THE LEASH, followed by THE CHOKING. THE HORRIBLE SOUND OF THE CHOKING. Are making us miserable with our little pug. Because really, if you mention an episode, I guarantee I have the damn thing.

    I love Cesar.

Just saw this for the first time today, is it a new show? We have a dog that has a mind of her own. She listens really really well when she is inside and close to food.

Outside, she turns into a cat.

now i admit, josh was pretty easy to manage from the start and i have a lifetime of dog/boxer experience, but after reading cesar’s book and watching the show and making the changes he recommends, walking/training/managing my dog (and others) is now a breeze.

an hour walk in the morning or a 45 minute run, and he leaves me alone all afternoon.

    i admit. i’m a fan.

I’d really love to know where you got the squid hat that you’re wearing in one of leahpeah’s pictures. My husband would love this hat for Father’s Day.…

    Thanks! :)

Pilgrimgirl, the hat was a gift… Muledesign has shirts that would make a great father’s day gift:

Thanks for the link to muledesign…a squid t-shirt is now on its way to us. :)

My husband will be delighted that it’s not a tie (though he might actually wear a squid tie)…

I wish I could just sent myself out to be trained to train my dog instead of having to go through the grueling work of actually learning new behavior.

I’m pathetic about getting up with the boys when it is so early…I dream about the day that they can…ohhhh at least watch cartoons maybe without totally dismantling our entire home…
