    About what I expected, too. It’s too bad it’s “crippled” with Edge, but the wi-fi will fill some of the void.

    It’ll be a while before we see them here in Canada. Rogers’ people have said that Apple hasn’t even entered into serious discussions with them, focusing instead on the US launch.

    I’m in the UK and don’t expect to see the iPhone here for a little while. Having just got a 3G Smartphone I would not be happy to go back to Edge. But I have to admit the interface is awesome. HTC have released the Touch which is a attempt to undermine Apple’s efforts in the cellphone market

    Hey, folks who live overseas, don’t feel singled out. I live in Missouri, and I can’t get one in my town either.

    There is nothing practical whatsoever about this phone for me as a small business owner.

    But I still want one like crazy.

    I actually got tears reading the Mossberg article today in the WSJ while riding the train to work. It is the love/hate thing. You know you HAVE to have one, and WANT it NOW, but know that it is best to wait for iPhone 2.0 with more storage and possibly more networks (sprint, tmobile, etc). But come on, you know you just want one to show off in public. I agree that the EDGE is not a smart move, but you know Jobs, he has faster connection plans up his black shirt sleeves.

    How about us bound to SPRINT through our jobs, who can’t change to ATT? The most frustrating thing of all about the iPhone is it’s limited availability for the world. Why would they limit it to ATT? Wouldn’t everyone(except ATT) make more money if it was available to all carriers?

    When the iPhone was first announced I watched the promo video over and over again. It’s so beautiful and so Apple.

    But considering I have a contract with Verizon and all my family is on Verizon, it’s gonna be a while.

    Isn’t it so Apple? They hitch their product to a single provider and then they further cripple it by having it access the Internet via Edge. Oh yeah, and they ignore Canada by not even talking to the ONLY provider that their new wonder product can work with!

    That’s what I hear.

    “I don’t need flat feet, but I’ve got them,” I replied with wit.

    The deal maker for me was unlimited internet access. That was a worry. With my current Cingular plan it’s something like 10 cents per kilobyte and since the iPhone will be so Internet intensive I figured it could cost a fortune. Apple thought of that and made it a non-issue.

    Second, activation. Now a non-issue. How long before other manufacturers follow suit?

    I’ll order mine on-line and have them deliver it to me. Oh, but I’m so lazy!

    Hey Charles…

    I know that using EDGE is a deal breaker for some, but it’s not the ONLY way that the iPhone can access the Internet. Including WiFi (or Airport) means that your Internet connection will often be screaming, as long as you’re in a wired office, Internet coffee shop, hotel, airport (the kind with planes), your home… that sort of thing. It’s a wired, wired world. So I’m not sure that I buy the slow-internet-connection argument

    I’m not thrilled with the tardy Canadian launch either, and I agree that AT&T is the iPhone’s weakest link. But Apple needed to find a provider willing to change their network dramatically to support the iPhone, and most providers balked. Cingular — now AT&T — didn’t. Apple had to make concessions to make it worth their while.

    With the smaller Canadian market, I don’t think Rogers is currently willing to make the changes that Apple needed — at least until Apple proves it has a hit on hands. Let’s see what happens in three months.

    I’d like to have one — even if I never actually use it to make a phone call. :-)

    Heh. Mossberg. I love him. I used to do tech PR, and met with him a few times, hawking some client product or another. Once, during the worst meeting of my life, his wife interrupted our meeting with a hysterical phone call, because her car had been impounded and, from what I could tell, she was nearing some sort of…arrest? For an expired registration, I want to say? I don’t know, but it was among the worst meetings I’ve ever had. Walt was hysterical, his wife was hysterical, his assistant hadn’t briefed him on our meeting, he was pissed, and oh God, the shit was just HITTING THE FAN.

    I’ve been afraid of him ever since, but I respect the hell out of his reviews, because he’s tough as balls, no matter who you are. So knowing that, while I won’t be getting one at the moment, today or ever, I’m impressed and a little excited about the iPhone. I am absolutely floored, however, that he’s not throwing a bigger fit about the price, because that’s almost always where he gets pissy. I’m a little disappointed in his lack of pissiness about it, in fact.

    I got the feeling Walt really wanted to hate it and couldn’t bring himself to it. Kudo’s to him being fair..

    No one is going to really use this until they get to a WiFi hot spot anyway. Did you know that a ton of McDonalds are ATT wifi ready? Your iPhone should work there. One thing I found interesting about Walts review was he didn’t even touch the iPod feature on this. For me, who has a ton of music and wants internet access at all times, and does actually hang out in Starbucks at times, this is perfect. The only thing that is stopping me right now is considering a wait for version 2.0.
