Utah’s Republican Governor Enjoys Coddling Racist Senator

I can’t believe this isn’t getting more attention. I’ve been busy having my head zapped and my nostrils prodded and haven’t linked to this:

Salt Lake Tribune — NAACP: Buttars should quit over ‘black’ baby comment; Gov. says let voters decide

Main story:

Salt Lake Tribune — Buttars’ racial slur leads to rebuke, apology

From the Mormon-owned paper:
Deseret Morning News | Buttars apologizes for potentially racist comment (nice use of “potentially”)

No one is acting well in this debacle. Governor Huntsman needs to take a stand. The Utah Senate and legislature needs to take a stand. The citizenry need to take a stand, particularly those who elected this nutburger. GOP thinking and acting at its worse.

Sen. Buttars is a stain on the state and a puppet of the fundamentalist right wing machinery that thrives in Utah. Further, it seems to thrive on hate, ignorance and intolerance. That Buttars hasn’t resigned over these comments or been censured in any way is a huge liability for the mainstream culture in Utah.

(Blurb, I’m sorry about this, but…)

Okay, Lesley. You need to take your meds, girl and loosen that sphincter muscle just a tad. You responded twice about my comment on the post following this one (the post that so aggrieved you), once here and then emailed me privately. Can you pronounce “overkill”? I mean, seriously. We’re on the same side of this issue. I made a mistake. If you’re thatpissed off over something so small, so easily resolved by a simple and kind hey-did-you-possibly-confuse-me-with-someone-else inquiry, it may be time to check the level of gastric distress in your home. And now, quite honestly, you’re starting to bug me: Leta isn’t sympathetic to Buttars as you insinuated in one of your several rants, my name is spelled with a “y” not an “o” and I’m a woman. Peace unto you. For reals. You could use it. At least treat yourself to a spa day or something.

Leta: Another great point made. And the eloquence you mention is Daniel-Tatum’s strong point. She’s brilliant at putting into words that which most of us cannot.

THANK you, Aaryn and Leta, for quoting/articulating that perspective. I often find myself struggling to explain that concept.

    Wait, seriously? No. Seriously?

How have I not heard this?

Well, that’s a damned shame. Also? Unbelievable. And? Now I feel like I have to strike Utah off of my Places I’ve Never Been But I Should Go Visit List.

Damn. It seems like such a pretty place, too.

    Signed,

A Dark Ugly Mother of a Dark Ugly Baby

(P.S. Thanks for bringing attention to the story, Jon. Because I don’t believe it’s made it out here to Texas, which is surprising, actually.)
