Slow Melt

Taken this past Sunday while walking the dogs. We had a “warm” snap (mid-40s Farenheit) and I broke out the Lensbaby 3g for it’s winter workout.

I shot this RAW and played with it a ton in the Camera Raw zone before opening it in Photoshop for final minor work. I usually shoot everything in RAW, but the Lensbaby adds such great elements to the image. Incidentally, the reason I’m calling these “Images” rather than “Photos” is that I tend to manipulate and tweak not capture reality. So purists, stop grinding your teeth and exhale.

    I don’t care if you’re tweaking or not, these are fabulous shots as always. I’m fascinated by the Utah landscape (it being so different to here in the UK as well) so it’s climbed right up my travel wish list!

    The Lensbaby is cool, one of those things I’m not sure if I’d use too often but I bet I would, so I may just have to grab one for my Nikon…

    Great work. The type of image that impels me to strap on the baby bjorn and get out there with the camera.

    i guess i am a “purist” but am in love w/ most of your pics. When I saw this one I was dying to know how you took such an insane pic (yeah, I heard gullible is not in the dictionary) so I feel just a teeny bit less jealous that you manipulated it.

    @Mish, to be clear, the only “manipulation” on this image is of the tonal variety. The blurs are all from the groovy lens.

    Amazing work on this image. lensbabies (would that be the plural??) are crazy cool. I definitely want one.
    LOVE the tone. It gives it such a mood.

    Also just wanted to support you on your depression talk. You’re doing the right thing. There is no reason to ever suffer without help. I do hope I don’t pass it on to my husband though…poor guy, he’s been through enough.     great picture — and — as a therapist and fellow sufferer of anxiety and depression — I appreciate everything you’re saying. Meds and therapy changed my life — after years of thinking it must be my fault, I feel free. Your writing has gone from C to A+ in the last few years -(Sorry — I’m also a former English teacher) but I don’t know quite how else to explain that it sounds as if you are writing from your center more. It’s clearer, more convincing, less tentative It’s just a pleasure to read. (I can’t believe my nerve in making these comments — but because you take such risks in revealing yourself, I feel braver. Pat

    I’m a Dooce reader and have been catching up on the archives (I’m up to November 2004). Both you and Heather are brave in your honesty and I don’t think you will ever know how much your experiences have touched and helped so many people around the world. Life throws crap at everyone but it helps me to really know that, and I can only know that when people are honest in sharing the reality of their situations. I’m finding it hard to articulate this, so anyways… just know that I respect your honesty and words and wish you and your family all the best, and am sending love from the other side of the world.
