Yay Again!

ABC News: Mommy Blogger: ‘Motherhood Is Awful’

I think that aside from the glooby term “mommy blogger”, this is looking like a great piece. The interview went a little further than what’s been out there from the national media. They shot a bunch of footage with me in it, but I don’t know if I made the cut. I tried juggling chainsaws that had been doused in lighter fluid and set alight as well as streaking down by the Mormon Church HQ, but both were deemed too extreme for network television. Especially when the chainsaw slipped and carved a gash in my titanium exoskeleton that is powered by Bluetooth and running the latest Linux kernel.

Check it on Nightline tonight. Crazy times, people.

I just wanted to hear her say crayon (ˈkrā-ˌän).

    Good piece.

Take that Kathie Lee…that’s a real story. Maybe next time she will actually prepare for a guest and know what she is talking about.

As I type this, I realize that Hoosiermama above makes my point for me. And makes it a little better. Thanks!

My husband now understands my love for you guys. No longer will I have to provide follow-up explanation when I talk about Heather (“Dooce? The blogger with the funny writing and badass pictures whom I aspire to be? Those links I send you all the time that you never read?)

Instead I can say “You know, the one who said poop 5 times on Nightline?”

And how much do I love the fact that they had to blur out “balls” on her screen when prefaced with “This site sucks sweaty…”? I love it a lot.

  • Danielle

Congrats to you and Heather on all your recent success.

Was really writing to say that I thought I’d recommend a musician, calls himself Bon Iver, to you guys if you hadn’t heard him yet. Just came out here in the UK and I think it’d be right up your street. Album’s called ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’, on iTunes.

(Little off topic but hey, there are no rules in cyberspace.)

This is, I think, the piece that I’ve always wanted to see about you guys. It’s excellent, and you guys should be really proud. Very cool, Armstrongs.

After putting it on my watch list, my TV changed at 11:30 and I realized I didn’t have the channel ordered.

Is it anywhere online? I’d LOVE to see it!

  • Spike

I hope people from the Today Show watched that interview and thought “wow, we really f’d that one up”.

Congrats to all 5 of you on a very well done interview.

And yes, Heather’s teeth may be a bit crooked, but as any good programmer will tell you “its a feature, not a bug”.

Hey, all…the video is embedded in the link Jon posted at the beginning of this article. Here’s the link, too. You have to watch a Rogaine commercial first, but it’s worth it to see Heather call Jon a “hot hot geek”!

GO, ABC! They did a MUCH better job than the Today Show. No comparison! Except that I did just compare them, so to hell with me!

  • Kristie

I missed it last night, but just found it posted on the abc.com website.

I thought it was excellent. Dooce is such a rockstar, and you’re all just
    so damn gorgeous…

    (and smart, witty, good dancers…)

You guys did so great. I loved seeing Heather with Leta. I absolutely hate the negative comments on the Nightline website. I get worried about what all this attention might do to you guys. There is negativity in terms of stupid emails and comments, but when you’ve been on television things just change. The kind of attention that brings can be very heavy. I keep thinking that Heather has to be so proud that she is doing well at this and that she is proud of her work…and I do consider it work. She’s a writer, a good one, and deserves acknowledgement of that. But in terms of people wanting to cash in on that in some way (ie Hollywood types) I just get leary. I know you guys had a bad situation with that publisher before. Please just be careful. Too much attention can be a bad thing, especially when it’s regarding your family…ya know.

I’m so happy you’re doing so well, yet so very worried that something might go badly for you guys, which I would hate to see more than anything. Tread lightly.

Though I have thought more than once that Heather’s life should be turned into a movie or tv series, LOL. I KNOW who should play her…Reese Witherspoon. Nay, she couldn’t be as ballsy as Heather. Hmm, who would play off of John Laroquette? MADONNA!!! would make a great Heather. Too old though (20 years ago though she’d been perfect!).

Anyway, from a long time daily reader, a mom who totally relates, keep up the great work Ms. Heather (and John). I am a bit worried though about what you were singing to in that taped piece. What that Mariah Carey????!!!! Please, please tell us it wasn’t Mariah Carey.

  • Lisa

The ABC website has the entire piece on their website. Congrats! Can’t wait for the Movie!

  • Deb

That was great! But jeez! The stupid comments on ABC! Dont they have some sort of block for jerks & weirdos? Anyhow, it was nice to see.
    Good luck with everything!

That’s awesome! SO much better than that ridiculous excuse for a Today show interview.

That was great! Thanks for the link Jon.

p.s. you’re pretty hot yourself! ROOOARRRR!

  • http://allyougetisme.blogspot.com/ Jess

I’m a little disappointed at the lack of strange editing. I had my fingers crossed for a good misinterpretation.

  • J. Bo

What more can I add? You both rocked… HARD (and looked fabulous).

The interview/segment itself was pretty good, but the tags/bumpers SUCKED ASS– ABC News has squatted down to Faux Newz level; Peter Jennings is spinning dervishly in his grave, I swear. ENOUGH with the “Mommy Blogger” and subsequent insulting horseshit, already.

(But I’m guessing Heather not-so-secretly loved the “vulgar” label; that has just GOT to do her ex-Mormon heart proud…)

@amy j., Heather is singing along to Alicia Keys in the shot where she is dancing in the kitchen.

  • southerngirl

Much better interview, although it really bugs me that even though the MSM is trying to “tap into the blogging trend” with these pieces, they completely miss the point of why Dooce’s site is so popular.

It’s not because of the “sensationalism “of her topics, which is what they like to hype because that’s what MSM has become all about. It’s because Heather is such a fabulous writer. Her refreshing outlook on daily life and her hysterical humor are wonderful, but it is her transcendent writing that keeps us coming back.

PS. Hope your golf game is going well, Jon. ; )

  • caro

    loved it!

  • Shelly

    Awesome Peice!

  • Mia

My boyfriend and I watched it last night; I thought it was very well done, and did a great job of capturing yours, Heather’s, and Leta’s magnetic personalities. Suffice it to say, after watching the piece my boyfriend was better able to understand why I’m constantly refreshing both of your pages.

  • http://sol.pupazzo.org Sol

You two are two beautiful amazing persons. I’m happy you share your hard, interesting and funny lives with others. Thank you.

  • http://www.montanajen.typepad.com MontanaJen

Am I the only one who giggled when the boobs were blurred out?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha.….…..

  • http://myislandnights.wordpress.com Amanda

I completely loved the segment! It was great to see you guys “in action,” if that makes sense — as opposed to just reading your words on my computer. You both seem like awesome parents.

  • Sarah

    Fantastic Interview!!!!

  • http://www.kparlin.com Kara

That piece is just all kinds of awesome. I love that they captured the interaction between you and Heather and Leta. I’m always amazed though when people mention critics who say that the blogs are just taking advantage of the family to make money. Why don’t they ask the same of writers who publish autobiographies? Or the people who contribute personal articles to the countless women’s magazines? It’s just odd.
