Powell Goes for Obama

From: TPM TV | Talking Points Memo | TPMtv: Sunday Show Roundup: Powell Play

(note: Talking Points Memo is tapping my political ass right now.)

McCain’s gamble to play to the fringe has not paid off. The Powell endorsement is a big one. The campaign is getting desperate:

McCain is so gone he’s using the same firm that slandered him in the 2000 primaries. So much for valor, honor and service to country. Best bit:

“The advocacy calls for George W. Bush’s campaign that became an issue in this year’s South Carolina GOP primary were developed by Feather, Hodges, Larson & Synhorst [FLS]. The firm maintains seven phone banks and 500 phones scattered from Phoenix to Minnesota. South Carolina, home of the Bush blitz, is one of the firm’s “best” phone centers, said partner Jeff Larson. “Military wives from all over the country make calls for us there.” “Phones are great,” he said, “because you can change your message right away.” With better voter lists and a new trend toward recorded messages, today’s political calls are “narrowcast”–antiabortion activists will hear one script, voters in one small area will hear directly from a local pol. “It’s a blossoming business.”

from The Washington Post, April 30, 2000

The goal of the robocalls? Voter suppression. In some states, robo calls are against the law unless the script is read by a live human.

Don’t let the insane in the membrane McCain turn you off Obama. This is a dirty tactic to make you think you shouldn’t vote.

Apparently, under McCain’s guidance, change isn’t coming to Washington anytime soon. o

all i can say is that colin powell’s endorsement solidified my decision to vote for obama – i hadn’t decided until listening to his summary of why he made the choice to vote for obama, and it was one of the most respectful and well put arguments i have heard so far in the election.

one person’s endorsement DOES make a difference.

Not really a very brave or even a significant endorsement in my opinion. Powell waited until Obama had a solid lead (a 100% certain outcome according to Pelosi) and THEN he made an endorsement.

When you consider what is happening to other conservative public figures who have endorsed Obama (Christopher Buckley) or merely mentioned that Palin isn’t ready (Kathleen Parker), it’s turns out that Powell is being quite brave. Naturally, Limbaugh and his ilk are rushing in to claim that, essentially, Powell is endorsing Obama because they’re both black. Obviously, Limbaugh didn’t really LISTEN to what Powell said, both during the interview and then in the clip that was filmed outside the studio as he was on his way to his car. Both clips are stunning in their clarity and thoughtfulness, particularly as compared to the frothings of the McCain campaign, Limbaugh, Hannity, & co.

I’m just waiting for the McCain campaign to play the gay card. By the end of this election, my bet is that they will have defined Obama as a baby-eating, communist, socialist, muslim extremist, terrorist, uppity gay man who hates puppies and wants to hook up with your mother.

    Country first my ask.

At this point, it’s 90% for Obama, 10% for McCain. Should be interesting to see the results for both this online poll and the actual election.

I hope so desperately that this election goes the way it seems to be…I am just so afraid that the Republicans are going to do something in the next two weeks that will scare the American people into being stupid, again.

I still run into people who think Obama is a Muslim terrorist. Then again, I live in Arkansas…what do I expect? Sigh…

Ok, what I want is for every single one of the Democrats who post on here, and for you Jon, to watch this and then tell me WHY it’s ok for two of your party’s poster boys to say these things…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asHmttxrxZE

as they CHASTISE Bush for not wanting to go to war…

But then you all have crucified Bush for eight years over this EXACT SAME reasoning.

    Explain this to me.

I’d love to hear the reasoning.

    AND

This endorsement you Dems are so proud of for Obama….from the man who gave this speech, which I watched at the time…and who you have chided as a group for being a huge reason we went into a war you oppose…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p2RXWvy4Vs

    NOW…he’s your golden boy?

Again, I’d love to hear the reasoning. Because it seems to me that what the Democratic Party does is twist and warp history to it’s on devices in order to get what it wants.

    Why am I not suprised.

I personally consider Powell a traitor, though I am no Bush supporter. He supported the Iraq War, urged our action and then when it was not a popular war he bolted and turned on his President, whom he’d supported until then…only to throw him under the bus and cover his own ass. That is no man of high honor in my opinion. He is supposed to be a man of true conviction? Ok then, he gives this speech and then acts years later as if he’d been “fooled” or coerced into making his original stand. Hmm, sounds alot like Obama. I think they’re MADE for each other.

@faydean, are you familiar with the Bush Doctrine (particularly the part about pre-emptive war? THAT IS WHY HE HAS BEEN CRUCIFIED.

Since the weird video you linked to has quotes taken out of context, I have no idea what your point is. Bush “sold” the war in Iraq under false pretenses. His staff outed a CIA operative out of retribution because her husband said the claims that Bush and his surrogates were making were false.

I don’t recall anybody referring to Powell as “our golden boy”. Just that he’s crossing party lines to endorse a Democrat. And Powell has a career to rescue after doing Bush’s bidding. That speech Powell gave to the UN? You thought it was AWESOME until this past Sunday, be honest.

faydean. It’s time for some honesty. In your head.
