Chief of Go F*** Yourself

Great profile piece on Rahm Emmanuel in the New Yorker:

“‘The G.O.P.,’ Emanuel said, decided that opposing the stimulus ‘was definitional, and I will make an argument to you, both on political and economic grounds: they will lose. I don’t think the onus is on us. We tried. The story is they failed.’”

Letter from Washington: The Gatekeeper: Reporting & Essays: The New Yorker

He seems bred to be Chief of Staff, particularly for this President.

To be fair, I don’t think the republicans are just playing the politics of ‘no.’ While Rahm is certainly entitled to his opinion, and emphatically pronounces it with disdain to all dissenters, I don’t see how anyone can be entirely happy with the stimulus package. The truth is, most politicians, and even economists don’t know how it will impact the economy. The economic position we are in doesn’t just come from “greed” as most politicians would have us believe, but rather from lack of responsibility on both the part of the government, lenders, and loan owners. Somehow, this government seems to believe that a problem caused by too much spending and borrowing can be solved by more spending and borrowing.

The Republicans seem to have one mantra and one only: tax cuts. Obama gave them tax cuts and they still voted against the stimulus. Time will tell if this stimulus works.

“This government” is following the heed of historical precedent (one that conservatives have spent the last 70 years trying to disavow as being the correct path, when their own ideas of unfettered free markets have clearly helped get us in this mess) of what happened during the New Deal.

You might want to take a look at the headlines in the major papers today:

Government spending creates jobs, despite what the right wing entertainers masquerading as experts say.
