Colin Powell’s Moderate Tone is Refreshing

I was gonna nap during the Sunday morning news junkie shows, but once I heard the tone of Colin Powell on Face the Nation, I perked right up. Powell was asked about his support of Barack Obama and if he regretted it. He also had some strong words for the fringes. I happen to think that in the U.S., we’re far more right-leaning fringe in terms of voice power; Fox News, expanded mainstream media coverage of right wing nutjobs v. left wing nutjobs and talk radio all spew nonsense every day. Not one whiff of common sense coming from conservatives and Powell calls them out on this, however gently:

The Price of Politics:

CBS News story here.

One thing Powell did not mention is that under Obama, we’ve captured far more Taliban than we did when Bush was in the White House.

I have to ask, why run for office, even as a minority party member of Congress, if you aren’t going to govern?

Oh, this is SO overdue! Bless you, Sir, for helping spread more sane, reasonable dialogue!

I agree, this is refreshing. But I have to wonder . . . can the right even here this? It seems like anything rational is met with some much defensiveness and self-righteousness. I hope that Powell’s words will influence . . . but I’m skeptical.

      One can hope.

I tend to think of myself as politically independent, but over the last couple of years the Republicans have trashed their own platform to the point where I have no respect for nearly anybody in the party. The only Republicans I really give any credit to for having a brain in their heads at this point are probably Ron Paul and Colin Powell (and of those two, admittedly, I’d probably only vote for Colin Powell if given the choice). I have no idea why the Republican party is going so far out of their way to embrace ultraconservatism instead of embracing more measured, moderate voices like Colin Powell, but as long as they’re doing so I’m probably going to be voting Democrat.

Thanks for posting the clip – I hadn’t seen that yet.

this is not the voice we hear enough in politics and in the media. measured. rational. reasonable.
