Innocent When You Dream

Saying I’ve had a very bumpy last few months is an understatement. Which is why, when I needed to wake Marlo from a very very late nap, I couldn’t resist taking this photo. This embodies everything she is, frozen in time.

I cover this kid in blankies to sleep under and like her mother and sister, she’ll be sprawled in some insane way when I go in and check on her, blankets askew and disheveled.

p.s. Spare me the bumper talk.

    Hey Jon,

Not sure why, but I got a big ole lump in my throat when I saw this photo of Marlo. I can relate to bumpy months, believe me. And I can really relate to capturing little ones like this…oh, the days of naps, how I miss them.

Anyway, I guess I’m a bit melancholy this week since my youngest is starting kindergarten. I miss those feet through the rails days alot, especially now that I know I won’t be having any more of them. (Btw, both mine had bumpers and slept in a crib until they were three, lol!)

It’s been a while since I posted on here. I appreciate you and Dooce allowing me to redeem myself. I think you remember my girls…perhaps you do. If not, I thought you might want to see how they’ve grown and changed in the past year. Good luck to ya Jon…I’ve been prayin’ for ya.

My youngest is a little older than Marlo and she just got her toddler bed so this reminded me of how bitter sweet it really is. She is just completely adorable!

She looks like she’s skiing :)

(PS I love how full of love this post is. Much love to your family.)

Thank you for sharing this intimate moment — with Marlo and with yourself. It’s a true celebration of all things baby and the mix of emotions we feel as parents as our babies grow up.

We have a little girl now 7.5 months old, our first child. I get such a kick out of her feet on the crib bars, through the crib bars, up the sofa or the wall in baby’s version of Viparita Karani, toes turning the pages on her favorite books… She’s actually inspired me to go barefoot more and reacquaint myself with the world through my feet. It’s an interesting practice in mindfulness, testing my own comfort zone and boundaries.

I expect someday there will be a shift where my daughter Sydney (and your girl Marlo) knows the world less through her body and more through her mind. I will simultaneously grieve that change and celebrate what’s coming next.

I’m sorry to hear you and the clan have been suffering such sad losses. May the passing of time and the fullness of love — presently and in your memories — help ease your pain.
