Neo Classical Civic Building

Image

I think it’s fair to say that I love pretty much any architecture. I used to be all about the crazy, but I like to think that my tastes have widened a bit. Don’t get me wrong, the EMP in Seattle is a perfect architectural rendering of what Jimi Hendrix sounds like. And if you don’t like Hendrix? Ok, the building is the sound of rock music personified, including hallucinogens.

While the decoration on this particular building would be considered needless by most of the Bauhuas disciples, There’s something about the Classic, Greco-Roman architecture (and Neoclassic) that feels right as a public building. There are exceptions (more images here), obviously.

During my 2009 trip to NOLA, this building caught my eye and I shot this image. I don’t know why I didn’t shoot the angle in the image above, but it may have been that I only had the 35mm fixed lens on that 2009 trip.

This is our Louisiana Supreme Court building. It’s also gorgeous on the inside. Although Baton Rouge is the state capitol, the SCOLA is located here in NOLA. Rumor has it that every now and then, the state legislature mutters about moving the court to Baton Rouge, and the judges throw a fit about leaving the city and the building. I don’t blame them.

I don’t blame them for wanting to stay. NOLA is so great!

Lovely shot — you really must come to Newcastle upon Tyne sometime, we have lots of (authentically old) buildings you’ll love :) And of course, most of England and Scotland has some fantastic architecture you’ll enjoy (highly recommend Edinburgh too)
