Just Outside My Back Door

Image

Was buried in code for a client and looked out the window to see a glorious magic hour after a day of gray and periodic rain. Grabbed the camera, elevator, come on come on, out the garage and onto the street where I stood for 30 minutes and took 300 shots of one of the best sunsets of the year. I’ve got a few more at different times with different clouds, but this one was my favorite.

While I wanted to capture the beauty, I also wanted to make certain I wasn’t just looking at this epic grandeur through technical eyes. I wanted to bathe in the light, feel its warmth and be grateful that I had the luxury of standing still for a time; the luxury of stopping and noticing; the luxury of recognizing the universe gave me a gift at my back door. Thank you, universe.

Affirmation: You already have everything. Notice it.

    Good god! My… holy shit!

(That was my genuine, honest, first look reaction when this page loaded.)

And now I have Creedence stuck in my head.

Wow, I love today’s affirmation. I’m going to rephrase it, “Quit yer bitchin’”, for my own use. Also, I am in absolute awe of these sunsets.

“Affirmation: You already have everything. Notice it.” This. Yes.

Ok, now I have to switch my wallpaper to THIS sunset from your photograph of the one from San Francisco. I feel like I owe you some money just to look at them. You are awesome. Period. Never doubt it. And thanks for the Affirmation. It, too, is perfection.

I recently moved from the UK to Cottonwood Heights. Stunning sunsets abound, and this captures one of them beautifully……….

Funny how hard sometimes it is to both take the shot and appreciate what you are shooting. I too also try to snap out of “getting the shot” to appreciate what I am actually looking at – my children, a flower, a bird.

Sometimes though, the act of trying to think about the shot helps me to see things in a way I never have before.

Awesome. If the earth can’t keep us humble, the sky certainly can.

The Eye of Sauron beholds you! That’s a serious looking sunset.

Is it because it’s in Utah that it looks like the whole sky is on fire? Or is that post-processing? I’ve never seen a sunset so magnificent as that. Beautiful. Stunning. Awesome shot.

That sunset was epic. I did some basic tonal work on this image and some sharpening. That’s it. It was crazy beautiful and I’m lucky to have captured it. If you look around the internet, you will find other works from that night that match the intensity. Hit Google plus or Flickr. Utah sunsets can be transcendant. Truly. The natural beauty is the best thing about the state.

    Best. Affirmation. Ever.

Stunning photograph, plus a great reminder to be present. Thanks for sharing!

I have repeated this affirmation about three dozen times in the past two days. Not just to myself, but also to my friends. I think it’s the best one, yet!

I just moved from Nevada (born & bred) to SE Alaska. These sunset photos make me so homesick.
