Back in the day, polygamy in the Mormon church was not for everyone. Only those in leadership positions. Generally those with some money, as supporting a large family required bank. Usually, getting a leadership position meant you had money (as it does today). I said usually. Easy, there.
I come from polygamists. My great-great grandfather had 7 wives. One of them left him. That would be my great-great grandmother. She paid for it. He left their offspring $1 each, so they couldn’t legally contest the will. This was over a hundred years ago. You wanna talk about punk rock women? o

I knew there was a reason you had 7 heads.
what with your great-great grandmother and my granny hamilton who used to break plates over my dad’s head, we’re sure to produce the most fearsome Race of Women, with Crazy Unruly Hair of course, Planet Earth has Ever Seen. move over Hillary!
Liberal Power BroadsŸ and/or Monobrowed Amazon Tiger Women. What if we have twin girls? Lordy.
Then that must be great-great-grandpa’s portrait with his 6 wives after your great-great-grandma left him.
the deerhunt is coming up. I’m not shaving until it’s over. I’ll be looking good ‘n polygy by then.
