Panther Networking Hint

December 10th, 2003

To follow up the previous drool-ridden incoherent post, I’d like to point Panther (Mac OS 10.3) users here. This fixed my woes and let my desktop and finder sidebar aliai do their job. Apple, would it have been too hard to put this somewhere for the kids?

Hope this helps. What in the name of God were they thinking?

I’m guessing he said/wrote this any time between the period of his first day of work at Apple to about a month ago when I found this quote. BTW, if you use Retrospect for backup you may want to check a rather lengthy thread on MacInTouch. Folks are having a variety of experiences with Retrospect 5 and 5.1 with 10.3.1. One fellow’s idea of putting a client on the server and running the backup from some handy old B&W G3 or whatever (or ancient Dell 600MHz for that matter) seemed to solve his problems. Me? I’m a big dummy and running 10.2.8 on all my client’s machines and reading the mail….BTW, Apple never “lies.” Jobs promotes. The software you get is what you get. Details like docs & such are not intended to interfere with use. Even the NeXT folks have been so indoctrinated. You’re supposed to be impressed with the Genie effect and now with the quick user change graphic. Now, don’t you feel better? ;) (Glad you solved your problem. Jesus that sounded awful. I put 10.3.1 on a small net of about 5 machines on premises and a couple off. Between Retrospect problems and some of the little boxes on OSX Server 10.3.1 not appearing to do what they were supposed to do…..I bailed out and went back to 10.2.8 for it (never upgraded the seats, just the server) and some day when it works I will reinstall on that little setup and the bigger fish I deal with. Cheers! Won’t be much longer daddy. Have sent a few annoying emails to your wife who writes hilarious articles, steered to you both by someone at Bare Bones or Daring Fireball as I recall. Looking forward to the baby pix………. :) If I post enough here do I get a virtual cigar? ;)
