Leta and Me
March 19th, 2005Sorry. No photos. I’m too busy trying to entertain. I have a better understanding of what Heather goes through every day. The most pressure comes from making decisions every .48 seconds and then spending the next 15 minutes wondering if that decision was the right one. After awhile, it gets tiring and the neuroses settle into a nice hum, but it’s very tiring trying to decide this decide that while Leta is pondering putting the next thing into her mouth.
It’s very wonderful to be alone with Leta. She’s getting very subtle with some of her communications. I said some. This morning, she hit the wall and looked at me with outstretched arms. I picked her up and she instantly snuggled into my shoulder, resting her head and going a little limp. Very cinematic tender slow motion moment with an Iron and Wine soundtrack.
The weather is warming a little today and when we took Chuck outside for his morning dump, Leta was extra squawky and wanted to get down on the slowly awakening grass. I sat her down (far from the toxic waste zone) and she immediately curled her toes and lifted her feet. She held her feet up, balancing on her butt for a good minute or two. The ab power of that girl is incredible. After showing her that the grass would not kill her feet, she started to crawl and talk to the grass. I can’t wait for nicer weather and breakfast outside. Seeing the sun hit Leta’s face and watching her respond to her shadow is priceless.
I’m also cracking up about the ticket and the bunny ears. I made it a point to warn Lady Ms. Dooce Who Likes to Drive Fast that Price, Utah is notorious for speeding and speeding tickets. Classic speed trap. Thanks Maggie and Heather for coming out! o

Sounds like the Leta-Dad interruption is going great. Although you certainly don’t make it sound superficial and perfect, you and Heather make parenthood sound rewarding and usually fun.
Have a good rest of the weekend.
“Very cinematic tender slow motion moment with an Iron and Wine soundtrack.”
Perfect. Sounds like a terrific morning.
Awesome. It sounds as if you two will have a lovely time bonding together.
Being alone with kids is hard, no matte rhow many there are. Good luck and ENJOY!!! Snuggles are the best.
Saw your comment on the mustachio’d cop picture. Is this Wilford Brimley weekend? I can’t get that sexy old walrus out of my head.
What a sweet entry.
It’s a great empathy exercise to spend time doing the full time baby duty. But it’s also so cool to get to spend time with your baby without anyone else around.
I hope the whole weekend is great.
Ah, those wonderous moments of childhood. The stuff we take for granted, as adults, are suddenly fresh. What a sweet ManDad you are. Folks like you make the universe smile. Blessings.
I’ve also been pulled over in Price… by a cop who looked like a 12 year-old out in his Daddy’s uniform. My companions and I nearly burst something trying not to laugh when he looked at me over his (Daddy’s) sunglasses and said “I’m gonna need to see your license, little lady.”
I definitely got a speeding ticket in Price on the way home.
Enjoy your precious moments alone together. All too soon Daddy’s Little Girl will be a memory.
-how you enjoy and appreciate those special moments with your precious baby girl….lucky Dad….lucky Leta.
You’re a good husband and father, Jon. I’m glad you are appreciating the time alone with her and not stressing too much on the split-second decisions. This will sound like a freaking Hallmark commercial, but it’s true: You’ll remember these moments forever.
any *particular* Iron & Wine track?
i can think of a few that fit well into your wonderful description of father & child snuggle.
i am having them more & more as my lil dood grows an ever beautiful shell.
Wait till your sweet girl can communicate…..
I have a 2 year old and omg. I want you and your wife to know that you are not alone in any circumstance that comes along with “child raising”. good luck when the time comes to figure out what freaking cup it is she wants her oranje juice in.
