I remember shopping and eating at Woolworth’s as a child and even as recently as the early 1990’s there was still one open not far from where I lived in Dayton, Ohio… how old is this picture?? Are there any still around?? Did Woolworth’s declare bankruptch and completely go out of business in the past 5-10 years???
i bought my first purchase EVER at a woolworth’s at age…9? a three-quartered-length-sleeve E.T. t-shirt. very 1980s. i will never forget that shirt and how it felt to buy something with my own money.
Oooh! I remember Woolworth’s! When they closed, we bought a bunch of stuff from them. We have to “Welcome to Woolworth’s!” rugs and a set of staff lockers.
There used to be a Woolworth’s with an attached lunchonette in the mall by my parents house when I was growing up- I would buy fish in a bag at Woolworth’s and then get milk shakes next door…. ahh I miss that place.
I just moved back from England and Woolies is the mutt’s nuts! They have EVERYTHING you could ever want, including, but not limited to, beer coozies with “Dead chicks don’t say no” emblazoned across the middle and plastic tape dispensers with a fair likeness of David Beckham rendered on top.
I remember, as a kid, every week when I was through with my CCS paper route, my mom would take me to Woolworth’s for a chili dog and a rootbeer float. That particular store went out of business a long time ago, to be replaced by a Dollar General store. I’m not sure if it still has the luncheonette inside. I’ll have to check it out the next time I make it back to Toledo.
The Woolworth stores/lunch counters in Charleston, SC sadly ALL closed down. Where else could you get sliced turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing all smothered in (greenish, salty) gravy??? I worked half a block from the WW on King St. My co-workers and I were sad to see it go. A hoity-toity tourist joint moved in.
We had a Woolworths here in Toronto that is sadly now a liquor store. (Well maybe not so sadly.) My one memory is that I did my one and only act of shoplifting there. I stole a fruity smelling eraser but I started crying as soon as we got to the car out of guilt. Mom frogmarched me back inside to hand it to the saleslady. I cried and cried – what a wuss.
You won’t find chili dogs and rootbeer floats in any Woolworths in the UK though I don’t even think they had restaurants/cafes – or at least not in the North East!

We had a Woolworths in Tacoma, but it closed long ago. The Building now houses a server farm.

I remember the Woolworth’s at the base of Powell & Market here in San Francisco. That location is now a Gap. Sad, but true.
Woolworths – still very much in business here in England – my nephew is there right now being spoilt by my dad in fact!
Is this from King Street? It’s been a while since I’ve been home to Charleston, but I think the sign is still up.

Yes, I am in London for the summer and I have seen two Woolworth’s. I was just thinking how funny it was that they still have them here.

Who can say no to Woolies?
There still is a Woolworth’s here in my hometown in Germany, too.

We had a Woolworth’s in Modesto, California. It was felt creepy in there.
