Rocky Responds
October 18th, 2005The mayor of Salt Lake responds to his Taliban remarks and gives some background on his alleged bar tab. Utah will always be regarded as a nutty place until someone can buy someone else a drink without the hubbub. Even people who don’t drink understand this basic social interaction. Except teetotalers.

It’s times like these, after reading the link, I wonder why I ever moved back to Utah. Yeah, it’s getting better, but we still have a loooooong way to go. And don’t even get me started on why this state won’t allow the lottery, when it would help pay for the education of the entirely too many children per household that people in this state decide to have and can’t support. Let’s just keep having our citizens sneak up to the Idaho border to buy tickets and pay for Idaho’s school system. (Sorry, stepping off the soapbox.)
Interesting read. I find it odd that at the end of the article, which of course was written by your mayor, it says “Editor’s note: Senior editors at the Deseret Morning News stand by Mr. Snyder, his reporting and the accuracy of the stories as they appeared in the newspaper.” Interesting read, indeed.

He used the phrase “media weirdness” - how unexpected that a politician would sound like someone from my own generation. He must have had one of his younger staff people help with the piece.
Sounds like a reasonable explaination to me.
But then, I live in a Province where our Premier got drunk, went to a homeless shelter and told them to “Get jobs.” http://tinyurl.com/c7kpy The fact that he won re-election by a landslide still makes my head hurt. No stranger to media weirdness here.
I hear you Jen. I used to want to leave this state in the worst way. Part of what keeps me here is the hope that more people like me will stay and bring a little balance. For now, I’m sure Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming all appreciate Utah as is.

Given that Mormons do not drink, how is it that they’re qualified to make others abide by their Byzantine drinking laws?
What’s really unfair is to ask a wait person in a loud Park City bar explain to a just off the plane tourist that they can not, in fact, order, nor receive, a double.

While I don’t appreciate my tax dollars being used to entertain someone privately, I can certainly understand the use of tax dollars in this situation.
It’s too bad that he needs to defend himself against people who simply don’t get it.
Not only did I work with Rocky during project for the city I also volunteered on his campaign, and he could never remember my name. But, I still think he’s a good guy, and wouldn’t trade him for a Utah Republican any day of this millenium.
