I suspect folks in this state don’t spend as much time thinking for themselves and instead do what they’re told to do by their very, very conservatives leaders, be they community leaders, church leaders, or whatever. If Utah is guilty of anything, it’s that.
I’m with madge: I’m surprised that 40% were willing to speak up in opposition.
I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop that Harry Ried (D.-Nev) is Mormon AND he’s a democrat. That’s a mortal sin, isn’t it? There are only a dozen of us mormon democrats in this state, you know. We have meetings in the back of my mini-van every other Tuesday.
Someday the crap-o-meter will swing over and the Rigtheous Utahns will realize that the Right is just as corrupt and evil as they accuse the Left of being.
In the meantime, denial is not just a river in Egypt.
Can’t you just imagine this Matt Canham guy sitting at his desk at the Salt Lake Tribune and going “hey guys, what do we call people who live in Utah? Utahers? Utah-ites? Hmmm, I know, I’ll put Utahns.”
I swear if George was on Wheel of Fortune and he got the letters…
G_ORG_ W BUSH
He’d have to buy a friggin’ vowel.
For every spark of genius, there are 100 with ignition problems.
I’m not a Bush supporter and I’m one of your 40% minority - Native of Utah, male, Mormon even.
I find it interesting that up until recently when I vocalized my opposition to Mr. Bush I almost always got someone who would defend him and his (lack of) administration.
Not too many willing to defend him lately.
Those that do try to point out that it was Rove/Cheney/Brown/BoogeyMan that did that, not George W. To which, I enjoy pointing out that he is responsible for EVERYONE in his administration, not just those that don’t mess up.
Perhaps we can get Pinky back in the White House and convince Brain to lay low for a while.
i find this simply beyond puzzling…with blogging and becoming friends with more and more americans and also reading how many anti bush blogs there are i find ’supportive’ bush stats mind blowing. where do they FOR REAL get these bloody stats???????
janet: just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t make them “dumbfucks” or “stupid”. That kind of rationale isn’t healthy in my opinion and furthers division in humanity. Honestly, I can’t really say if Bush is right or wrong. I hope with all my heart that what he has done in Iraq is for good. I seriously doubt it, but I could be wrong.
erat: As a lifelong actively engaged Mormon, I can say with authority that I have NEVER been told who or what to vote for by church or community leaders (when I lived in San Francisco during the Prop 22 days the Church came very close, however). In general, I believe that too many people leave the thinking up to someone else and that isn’t exclusive to Utah. YOu can thank Rush & Sean for that.
NothingButBonfires: the term “Utahn” is and has been widely accepted and used for as long as I can remember. I know that it doesn’t roll of the toungue as gracefully as say “Californian” or “New Yorker”, but that’s the hand the language gods dealt us.
Jon Deal: I am glad that Harry Reid is in the position that he is. I recall reading a SL Tribune article a couple of years ago when Harry accepted his role as minority leader. The article mentioned how there was a perception among some LDS faithful that Harry isn’t active and that he has even recieved death threats (but then again, I’m sure that most members of Congress have). Well, Harry is active AND a Democrat. Go Harry!
AMEN to that! That asshole snowed most of America which just goes to prove how totally blind and ignorant we have become. Washington is probably turning in his grave by now.

All I can say is that it’s a good thing to allow presidents to serve only two terms…

Like in Anchorman, with San Diego.

I laughed and cried when I saw that headline in the SLC Tribune this morning. It sort of sums it up, doesn’t it? Living here is funny. Or not.

“Only 38 percent of Americans give Bush the thumbs up.”
I wish the other 62 percent would buy my t-shirt.

Shows you that we need to start taking our ADD medication more seriously here behind the “Zion Curtain”.

Most revealing comment in that article:
“The people of Utah may not understand the harmful effects that deficit spending will have on our future and our children.”
No kidding? Ya think?
October 19th, 2005 at 5:13 pm
It is puzzling. Truly. But frightening, more than anything.
And, how do you say Utahn? Just like it looks or “Utahin?”

Alright then.

Let me know where those meetings are, btw.

Patatomic, come on, I just thought it was funny! Not EVERYTHING has to be a point of controversy.
October 19th, 2005 at 6:32 pm
As a matter of fact everything DOES have to be a “point of controversy” especially when it comes to Utah and Mormons and stuff.

If you have not read it, check out Thomas Freidman’s column at http://select.nytimes.com/2005/10/19/opinion/19friedman.html
You will need to register for a free account but if you have any problem with Bush, you need to read this.
October 19th, 2005 at 7:50 pm
Hey Jim, can you copy and paste it here if it’s not too long? Or summarize the main points?

Isn’t there enough evidence to impeach this Bastard? For the love of Jesus, Mary AND Joseph. We’re only into 2nd term year one for fucks sake!
Holy shit. I just went to Google to make sure I spelled impeach correctly and the first link is “Vote to Impeach Bush”.
Here’s the url: http://www.votetoimpeach.org/
