Before & After
February 28th, 2006People ask me all the time if I edit my photos. This is a loaded question. Of course I edit them. It’s very rare that a photo just happens and everything is perfect. Sometimes everything is great, but the light is flat or the tone is wrong. Most of the edits I do involve color correction (or color interpretation) and sharpening. The images are resized for sharing on the web, and sharpening makes a big difference when you shrink an image.
On the day I took this photo
the sky was flat and gray. There was a ton of construction and the best shot was at the tram stops. The problem with the tram stops is that they have tons of overhead wires that are a complete distraction from the subject. As an exercise, I decided to remove the wires and then color correct, sharpen and touch up the sky:
I don’t always do such drastic work on an image, but it felt good to abuse the clone and healing tools.

All I have to say is this: You are a great photographer and just as great a graphic designer. Both skills are equally admirable.

That looks really artsy. How did you get the halo effect around the clock tower?

Rock On! That looks amazing. You got mad CS skillz.

Forgive the OT, but Heather’s month 25 posting brought tears to my eyes. I’m so sorry that the internet is full of folks who do a good imitation of sacks of crap, and that they think that they know how you three should live your lives.
Know that you are loved, even by many who will never meet you.

That is amazing. I am totally amazed at how you removed those wires! You could make a ton of money teaching a Photoshop Seminar. I would TOTALLY attend! (Hey, that can be part of the tour in Austin!)

I’m nuts about your aesthetic.
I agree with another commentor concerning the gradient…could be a little more subtle. You and Heather take such beautiful photographs. You guys were a big reason we opted for the D70 in lieu of a Rebel. I guarantee Nikon made some money off of Dooce. You might see if you can score an endorsement deal.
P.S. Are you having as much trouble with Rosetta and crashing design apps as I am?
