November 21st, 2006Guy Fawkes bonfire in the Canadian wilderness. This was the closing night of the conference (see previous entry) and reminded me of bonfires from 20 years ago in England. Minus the car. o

Wasn’t Guy Fawkes the guy who tried to blow up Parliament with a car bomb, possibly a Mazda RX-7 loaded with explosives, clogs, and licorice? Sounds familiar. But wasn’t Guy Fawkes Day over two weeks ago?

I was wondering the same thing myself: maybe it took a few weeks for the news to get to Canada.

OK, I live in Calgary and I don’t know anyone who even knows about Guy Fawkes let alone lighting up a stuffed dummy in a massive bonfire.
And yes, Fawkes was the dude who tried to blow up the British Parliament. Check out V For Vendetta. A great modern version of the lovely tale. V wears a mask that resembles Guy Fawkes.

Bonfires in Englang? What, did the Detroit Pistons win a championship over there as well?

Ah, but what kind of car do you light on fire on Guy Lafleur Day?
Me, I vote for a 1964 Pontiac Laurentian.
