Why I Was Fired - New York Times

This is from a Republican prosecutor:

“What the critics, who don’t have any experience as prosecutors, have asserted is reprehensible — namely that I should have proceeded without having proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The public has a right to believe that prosecution decisions are made on legal, not political, grounds.”

I’m glad you posted this because it gives me a place to confess the overwhelming schadenfreude I’ve been experiencing over this whole firing of the US Attorneys fiasco. I should preface by saying that I’m an attorney born and raised in the good old Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I’ve lived in Central Florida for the last ten years though. While I love living here, the rightish politics get to me (I suspect that you can relate).

I first noticed this story awhile ago when I read a blurb about Carol Lam being fired. Then more stories trickled out. Then I heard David Iglesias on NPR Fresh Air a couple of weeks ago. Then there were hearings. Then there were emails. Then there were more hearings. Then Iglesias wrote today’s NYT editorial. Now there are subpoenas.

Alberto “Torture is Legal” Gonzales is going down. I can’t tell you how happy I am about this. And I am conflicted about this happiness because I do not relish other peoples’ misfortunes - even if I don’t like them. Until now. Please forgive me. I’m enjoying the spectacle. Finally, something might stick to this administration.

I believe that was wrong of them to be fired. It is the attorney’s job to persecute through evidence, not their political views. There should be no favorites, everyone is equal in this country and no one should be given more power to them in respect of judgement.

Money on the other hand, I am conservative. I want to keep God’s money that I earn. I would rather give my money to the needy rather than to the goverment.

Yeah, my wife is an attorney and she said basically the exact same thing as blurb’s pull quote. But she’s much smarter than me and had to break it into smaller words and easier sentences. :-]

January, 2009 can’t come soon enough.

I feel bad that I don’t have anything positive to offer. I have faith in the ability of this nation to become better, to be more responsible, to take care of those in need, but I have nothing but bile in my brain for politicians, no matter which of the puppeteer’s hands they are riding.

And what really upsets me is that I’m starting to believe more and more that “we the people” are the puppeteer.

*harumphs and lurches back into conspiracy cave*

Am I the only one talking back to the TV this AM telling the reporters and politicians that I don’t care, that most of the country doesn’t care, we’re just trying to get through our own (sucky little) lives?

If these attorneys have truly been fired because they did their jobs and used the evidence to determine who or what to prosecute (vs. having political motivation), then there needs to be a good hard look at who was “thwarted” and how that relates back to the actions taken to remove the attorneys from their positions.

It seems to me that political neutrality needs to be added to the “protected categories” for government employment, along with race, gender, marital status, etc.

Where is Mr. Smith when we really need him?
