So It Goes

Kurt Vonnegut Is Dead at 84

I remember seeing Breakfast of Champions in the hands of an upperclassman in my high school debate class when I was a freshman. It took me two years to be able to check it out of the city library, because it was always checked out. I went through a huge Vonnegut phase after that. Reading him felt like entering a new, semi-forbidden world. Cat’s Cradle is my favorite. o

I always found his writing style very relaxed which made it difficult to put his books down.

I loved nearly everything he wrote, but am especially partial to “Galapagos”.

    Slapstick was my favorite.

Hearing an NPR story on Vonnegut this morning, reminded me why I enjoyed his books lo’ those many years ago. Now, I’m gonna have to check out of his stuff at the library.

Welcome to the Monkey House was a great collection. My older sister had all of his books. I remember one story of the weighted ballerinas, beautiful people with bags over their heads…smart people with loud noises going off to keep them from thinking…I think of that story frequently although have not read it in over 20 years. Going to dig up that story again. I was maybe 15 when I read it.

Cheers to the man who got me reading - for me, not just for school requirements. Breakfast of Champions was my first, quickly followed by everything else I could get my greedy high school hands on. Much obliged Mr. Vonnegut. Much obliged indeed.

He was a fabulous author, a great person, and a voice that needed to be heard. Rest in peace, Kurt.

It’s always been Slaughterhouse Five for me.

When I heard he’d passed, I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate than

    So it goes…

It was Galapagos for me too. I think about that book all of the time and I must have read it 10 or 15 years ago.

Cat’s Cradle was my first Vohnnegut experience and is still my favorite. Breakfast of Champions is a close second. I nearly drove off the road this morning when I heard he’d passed away.

A true loss. I agree, Cat’s Cradle is likely my favorite. Citing an excerpt from his ‘Bokononism’, I tipped my hat to Vonnegut last Halloween: http://tinyurl.com/2ujga7

Sorry he died, but I was not a fan. “So it goes…” wore me out in Slaughter House. Overused, big time!

Vonnegut was excellent. I saw him speak once at Stanford a while back, and he was as great in person as he was in print. One of the things he said is that reading a book is superior to meditation, because it’s a meditation with another mind.

The first thing I did this morning after reading the news of his passing was to find the intro to “Breakfast of Champions” and put it on my blog. The audacity, humor and truthfulness of it are still breathtaking more than two decades after it was written.

Cat’s Cradle was my all time favorite. I didn’t even know about his passing until I was listening to NPR.

Wonder if there are any blogs dedicated to him out there? Does anyone know?

I am very lucky to have seen him speak at his last university lecture he gave at Ohio State last spring. I almost cried when he walked out on stage. My life has never been the same since I began reading his books.

    Rest in peace!

It’s funny, I’ve never read anything by him but I felt very sad when I heard he had passed. I almost killed my husband with shame yesterday when I said, “Hmmm. Jonathan Livingston…?”.

    “NONONONO! Slaughter House FIIIIVE!”.

The Sirens of Titan is my favorite. Then Cat’s Cradle, which was the first book of his I read.

It’s sad. But I guess if anyone was ready for death, it would have been him.

I only read Slaugherhouse 5. What a weird book. I liked it, though, and I think I might read it again. I always think of Dresden when I think of that book.

When I was a young, aspiring writer, I read Vonnegut. Wow. He was original and unique. Very influential for me, too.
