Slashdotted… BY MY WIFE

April 25th, 2007

Yeah. Got linked to files that I used to host for Heather back in the low bandwidth days of dooce.com. That pretty much jacked WordPress nine ways to Egypt. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks to readers for sending in reports. I’ve been taking care of the last of the to do list on the old house. We’re so close. I’ve half a mind to hire a dumpster and throw away everything in the new garage.

Good to know that WordPress takes a big dump under heavy traffic. Anybody have any tips?

The irony: Heather had the files on her server THE WHOLE TIME. We’ll resume our unregular, unscheduled programming now. o

I saw this on digg a couple weeks ago:

Some geek-fu in there. Seems to me like the bottle neck becomes the mySQL DB calls. YMMV.

I think the crash was my fault! I was looking at dooce’s photos of your previous kitchen remodel when everything froze up on picture number 22. right after that, blurb was all error, no fun. sorry! :)

Jon Deal, the truly weird thing is that the files live on their own, OUTSIDE of WordPress.

    Rene, you didn’t break anything.

Totally wierd……When I first looked up the site it was all black and I had to highlight on text in order to read it, then I hit refresh and VOILA!

That refresh button is magical, right next to unicorns and leprechauns.

Darn, I hate it when that happens. I hope life is starting to settle in at your house.

Yeah, that slide show is all static HTML pages, right? And you wouldn’t think the pop up javascript would kill the box. It’s “just” a metric ton of requests per second. :-]

I think it’s because of your blind allegiance to the Commodore 64 as a hosting platform. It’s time to move on, Jon. :-]

    blurb Says:

But why would that slam mysql?

    jon deal Says:

That is the “head-scratcher” indeed. The requests for static HTML files and images shouldn’t have burped the DB at all.

*must resist temptation to offer to comb through your log files*

Though I’m sure the answer is in there somewhere.

Does everything (Web server, DB) run on the same box? Are you on a shared hosting account, or is it a dedicated server?

Sorry to be that person, but don’t you mean “irregular”? I mean, given the tone of your household and all. Har.

Have you ever heard of http://www.squarespace.com? I use them to build websites and blogs for our clients. They are hosted at peer one in newyork and have pretty much never been down. Bandwidth is pretty much not an issue. Might be worth a peek.

“blind allegiance to the Commodore 64 as a hosting platform” - LOL!

I just thought my browser was playing up, since it seemed to be back up and running pretty quickly!

Definitely try the WP cache if no one’s pointed you that way already. It’s a lifesaver on our site.
