Back to Mostly Normal
May 8th, 2007Heather’s back and we’ve got the office going strong. It’s crazy to have a working office. I feel productive. George needs a desk and I need software and there are a couple of closets full of crap boxes that will be slowly gone through over the next few weeks (once we get some bookshelves or laser controlled containment system), but it’s feeling good.
We’ve already had the disputes about what to have for lunch (we talked about going out, but that was just pseudo-office banter) and who gets control of the music. So far, I’m winning, but I expect that I’ll be subjected to more WHAM! and Milli Vanilli in the coming days.
George even stapled his TPS Report this morning, including the new cover sheet. The memo system appears to be working.
So has anybody purchased the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium jumbo-pak? Is it worth it? I’m particularly interested in Fireworks, Photoshop and Flash. Any good? Anybody running it on a MacBook Pro? I’ll probably get it regardless, but I wondered if anybody noticed a big speed jump with Photoshop and/or Fireworks running on an Intel MacBook Pro.
p.s. it’s great to have my lady back home. I missed her terribly. o

I think you have to go with Web Premium over the Web Standard. Otherwise you aren’t getting ANY version of Photoshop CS3. Which is just a bone-headed (or smart, depending on how you look at it) move on Adobe’s part. I can’t think of any sane Web Dev weenie who wouldn’t at least have PS in the tool kit.
I’d also be willing to be that NO ONE buy the Web Standard edition of Creative Suite.

Jon, Go for Web Premium. What is the point of NOT getting Photoshop w/ ImageReady if you are a web developer? And you get AI too!
here is a comparison link: http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/web/?tab=prem-vs-std
dont have any info for you on speed jump. but its supposed to be lots faster, esp if you are running native apps.

I don’t have the Web Premium, so I can’t speak to Fireworks, but I did get the Design Premium (with Photoshop and Flash) and so far it’s been great. I’m running it on a 15″ MacBook Pro and Photoshop is balls-to-the-walls faster than CS2, but that’s not a big surprise. The interface took some getting used to (and there are still some things that bug me about it) but not a bad job by Adobe.
And Flash looks… flashish? I dunno, I never use it.

Photoshop CS3 is definitely faster on a Mac. And the new selection tools are far superior to the old Tragic Wand.

You and Heather should buy a water cooler for the office and then hang out around it.

I can’t speak to the web version, but the print one has been nothing but trouble. Most of my vendors haven’t switched yet, and CS3 doesn’t allow you to retrosave further than CS2 (which I skipped by going from CS to CS3).
I’d love to be using it, but have to run a parallel desktop just so I can use my old programs (CS3 has a lovely way of not only not allowing me to use them, but of corrupting (!!) my old files).
Is it fast? Yes. Is it worth it? For print, decidedly no–until the vendor universe catches up or until Adobe fixes that little glitch. Which the nice young man at Adobe told me yesterday was a big, fat, no-chance-in-hell-lady.

If your office really wants to be like mine it will need a clique of gossipy bitches talking behind your back. Does your office have that yet?

I just upgraded to the full shebang upgrade. I can tell you right now that I find PS and AI to be much more streamlined and have a few neat new features. Also, Bridge has made quite a few strides which has changed the way I manage files and photos. I can’t speak for the web stuff quite yet, but all seems well. BUT the only downfall I’ve encountered thus far is that our printer, a fiery, doesn’t have the right drivers to print the files in the right orientation. I’m hoping, expecting rather, that a patch of some sort will come out soon.

Just bought Web Premium on Monday and I am LOVING IT! I have always been a huge fan of Fireworks, for the stuff I do all day it is by far the fastest/easiest. The speed increase over CS1 on my Macbook is unbelievable.
Also I was impressed with Adobe’s upgrade pricing. Premium was only $499 since I bought Macromedia Studio in ‘02. I thought that was a pretty sweet deal.

Mike Swimm, I bought the Web Premium as well. Since Heather is using the tower more and more, I have to have the suite at my beck and call whenever a need arises and I had to jump into it with a new copy of the suite. So I’m hurting right now. The hole where the kidney was isn’t healing like I thought it would.
Thanks everybody else for your comments.

John,
Sounds like you have the kind of hurt that only an office full of the sweet sounds of Steely Dan can fix.
Good Luck!

I don’t have a clue about the web stuff, but it must be nice knowing you can flirt with the cute girl at the office without getting in trouble.

Dude. I want to work for you guys. I have no attention span or work ethic, but I’m pretty damn funny and I smell ok most of the time.

Your office will be complete when you own a red stapler!

I’ve been a big fan of fireworks since it came out… I’m pretty happy they didn’t kill it when Adobe bought out Macromedia… for web stuff, it completely rocks.
