For what it's worth, festival fans, The Flaming Lips are my personal highlight after three years at the somewhat-smaller Wakarusa Music & Camping Festival. They put on a joyous, amazing show, with several thousand in the crowd.

I saw them a few months later at ACL, and it wasn't even close, so ... Do with that what you will. I think I have the same impatience with super-crowded shows.

Jon --

Weren't you disappointed that they played only about half of their advertised set? They were scheduled to play 9:00 - 11:30. They came on at exactly 9, took their first break at 10:15, and then peaced out at 10:40. They didn't end on a popular song, and didn't even return to the stage to receive the thunderous applause they surely would have received from a grateful audience. Maybe I'm unaware of some long-standing tradition of abruptness (they broke up before I was born), but the euphoria I felt during the show swiftly became confusion and anti-climax when Radio Bonnaroo and the lights came back on.

Regardless, I'm glad you had a great time and I'm disappointed that I was standing somewhere near you, judging from your photos, and didn't get to introduce myself -- the writing and photography crafted at the Blurbdoocery has captivated me for about a year and a half now. Thank you!

PS Next year, try hitting the Jazz and Comedy tents to beat the heat -- they're air-conditioned, and we saw the Ravi Coltrane Quartet and Dave Attell.

Your review brought back a flood of memories from the evening of June 6th in Seattle. My dad suprised me with tickets to the first American show that The Police had played in 23 years. Fitting that this is my 24th birthday and I have no real memory of The Police when they were actually a functioning band.

There is that tape that I made when I was 7 or so singing "Every Breath You Take" at the top of my lungs along with Sting but nothing compares with standing with 16,000 other people singing along when they played that song last after 2 encores. Also, the 8:10 min Roxanne (that's available on YouTube) played that threw off the entire audience- it was fantastic to watch Sting giving Stewart shit. "Welcome to the Stewart Copeland Show"

I could go on but it's best that we all have these great memories of a 25 year old band coming back together and kicking all of our asses.

Lefty,

We sure had a laugh over that one - for years! Wish you could have come down from Oregon to be with us that night. You were missed.

Great review of the Police show! I'm chuckling a little because Wilco's "Muzzle of Bees" is on Radio Paradise as I type this comment. I'd love to see them in concert, too.

Anyway, I never got a chance to see the Police (my mom thought I was too young to go when they last toured), but they were my absolute favorite band. Unfortunately, I won't get a chance to see them this summer, either, so it was nice to live vicariously through your review.

The Police. Wow. I'm a lurker, but I'm busting out of my lurky-lurkness to tell you how extremely jealous I am that you saw The Police. (And Wilco, always a favorite but I've seen them many many times). I have the opportunity to see The Police this summer AT WRIGLEY FIELD. Have you been to Wrigley Field? It is fucking awesome. I have never seen a concert there but have witnessed many Cub losses. I will be in France when The Police play. (IN FRANCE!) I've never been to France. But France will be there next year. Will The Police? I FUCKING DOUBT IT! And yet, I'm France-bound. Ugh. The things you do for love and a free place to stay on the coast. IN FRANCE. (But still, it's not The Police. Sigh.)

Ha! I thought it was weird that someone came all the way from Dubuque to sell pizza. So I had to patronize them!

Thanks for this, I felt like I was there and didn't even have to get sweaty. I always think of Stewart Copeland when I hear Bloc Party/Matt Tong. And sometimes the Police genrly but mostly it's the fantastic drumming.

Perhaps JB felt that the song was an anti-polygamist tirade?

Don't suppose you got your pizza from a stand called Pizza on Wheels? A friend of mine works at Pizza on Dubuque (in Iowa City) and during the summer they travel cross-country around to all the festivals serving up hot slices of 'za under the name Pizza on Wheels. Just curious; he was at Bonnaroo as well.
