Max Roach, a Founder of Modern Jazz, Dies at 83 - New York Times

Truly great drummers are very few. Max Roach was definitely one of the greats. When a drummer doesn’t need a huge kit, can make one drum sound like a myriad of drums, that’s talent and artistry:

    Watching him play is like going to a museum and seeing one of those paintings of straight lines or three circles or something and you say, “Pff… even I could have painted that” except that you know goddamned well that really…. you can’t.
