San Francisco, why you be hatin on me?

P.S. MTV hosting anything with the word “music” in it is pointless. Alicia Keys was the best thing about the VMAs. o

Wifi on a Macbook Pro does, in fact, BLOW.
We have a wireless router (and quite a good one) in our bedroom. I can’t get reception on the Mac Book Pro in our living room. I live in a less than 1,000 square foot apartment.

Apple seems to have problems with WiFi on high-end notebooks. iBooks had better WiFi than PowerBooks, and now MacBooks have better WiFi than MacBook Pros.

Dunno what the deal is Maybe a different monitor manufacturer? The antenna is in the monitor unless I’m mistaken.

the VMAs looked like a monkey decided that would be cool.

    nice concept. REALLY bad execution.

    seriously!

same frickin’ problem here. Old Dell laptop had flawless WiFi. Brand spanking new MacBook Pro is much worse.

I wonder if it’s the pseudo-aluminum body that makes the wifi in MacBook Pros so bad? Just thought of that because of the plastic over the antenna part on the iPhone.

Just to check, you’ve turned on Interference Robustness, yes?

I am dying here - I ordered a brand spanking new MBP - am on a dell laptop now - is this a problem for everyone???

Wi-fi in my 800 sf Manhattan apt - on balcony, in bedroom, etc. very important to me!

EDGE is the single major shortcoming of the iPhone.

Shan, I think it does, but for the record, my iPhone couldn’t find the wifi, either.

Bill, yep, Interference Robustness is activated.

J, you should be fine. At home I have great wifi. It’s really more a fault of the hotel and old firmware or old router that doesn’t quite have the range it should. I’m in a different part of the hotel posting this comment and it’s fine.

    You’ll love the MacBook Pro.

I blame Linksys. I always do.

My MBP’s Wifi is fine. We have an Airport Express in our 2 bedroom apartment with concrete walls and I have full signal all the time. Even on neighbor’s networks. Never had a problem.

Alicia Keys and Chris Brown were my fave parts.

LOL! Thanks for the encouragement - I am excited again!

My MBP’s Wifi is great at home and at my office, but schlepping it on the road is a different story entirely. Certain hotel chains (Hilton, specifically) seem to do a better job than others.

Actually, the WiFi on a MBP does indeed blow. It’s a long standing problem due to the metal case. I’m a government weenie and I go through many variations of these things (I’ve had all sizes & shapes). I currently have a 12″ & 15″ & I’m waiting on my new 15″ to come in (your tax $ at work). It was embarrassing when my brother in law could get a nice clear signal on his MacBook when I couldn’t even see the network.

Wouldn’t trade them for the world, tho.

PPS: The best thing about the VMA’s was Britney’s “comeback” She was a trainwreck and apperaed like she she was so messed up she couldn’t even keep a beat, let alone dance. And she didn’t even pretend to sing, which was disappointing because I love when Britney’s lipsyncs like she’s singing ina choir. Sad night, I enjoyed Rock of Love much better.

    No techie talk for me.

    jon deal Says:

    What jp said.

A part of the problem with the high end mac laptops is that the WiFi antenna is essentially being surrounded by the metal of the case.

It’s like a mini Faraday cage.

Apple tries to mitigate the problem by embedding the antenna in plastic inside the display part of the laptop, but it doesn’t always help.

I agree with Meg. I’m actually working on an article on the VMAs at the moment, so I’m glad my opinions on it seem to be the general consensus. Alicia Keys was good, but I was surprised by that Chris Brown kid. I didn’t like the music, but did you see his moves? Wow! I bet Tommy Lee wished he could leap over tables like that when Kid Rock was kicking his ass.

errrrrg. now you tell me (as i type on my otherwise lovely MBP). i knew i shouldn’t have upgraded from my powerbook pismo! you could drop-kick that sucka and everything would still be okay…

I just came back from san fran monday!

We found the best all-you-can-eat sushi place called Sushi Hana. It’s on Van Ness & Eddy. The lunch has all-you-can-eat rolls, and the dinner is all-you-can-eat nigiri. Seriously some of the best sushi i’ve ever had..

Okay - Heather is totally gonna be upset over Meg’s comment, right? I mean, doesn’t Heather still have a special place in her heart for Brit?

We’ve all gone thru the possibilities - she was too stable to be drunk, too alert to be stoned on pot, not alert enough to be on meth or cocaine - we’ve decided it’s heroin.

  21. 21
    Meg Says:

I agree with Tiggerlane on this one. Also, I say she was a trainwreck with a heavy heart. I once had naughty dreams of Britney back in the day as well, but one can not live on the past alone.

    Heather Says:

Ok so I’ve heard bad things about this edge network. Now that the iphone is cheaper, I’m considering buying one. How awful is the edge network? How awful is it trying to email videos, etc? Should I just wait until it’s available on 3G, or will that even happen? Sorry if my terminology is hard to understand. I am, admittedly, not well versed in the exotic language of the nerd.
