Insanely Rad
October 15th, 2007Thanks to Matt over at Mattlandia for starting me down the YouTube rat hole searching for crazy soap box racing videos. Hit the link to watch another wonderfully batshit nutjob video.
These people are insane in a really good way. I love that the racers attach cameras to their vehicles. There is a huge part of me that wants to build a car/cart and try this. I’d need body armor, but damn this looks so fun.
Be sure to hit You Tube and read the comments. Apparently, there is a rivalry between the San Francisco and San Fernando Valley racers. Brilliant. o
Update: Video from the Rocket car:

Of all possible activities for the father of a toddler, I’d say that ranks pretty much at the bottom in WAF (Wife Approval Factor). I’m just saying.

This would be awesome! Just thinking zooming down from Ensign Peak, City Creek, or through Harvard/Yale.

i’m game. i may send these links to my friend todd to see if we can build two for laguna. he’s got welding gear and a garage.
and as far as the WAF, just threaten the purchase of a suzuki GXR 1000 and the soap box derby will likely get an easy nod.

I’ve been to two Soap Box races in Atlanta. Nothing like the SF road races, and even still, it’s awesome to watch. Can’t wait to try it myself - with head to toe airbags…

Oh Jeez, the feeling in my gut right now to leave work, run out and build one of these and organize a race is almost irresistible. IRRESISTIBLE!

Seeing these little cars shoot through stop sign intersections makes my stomach clench. Since these are illegal (I gather from their names), I hope they at least have people at the intersections stopping traffic.

I think I just found a new garage project (as if I didn’t have enough already)!
So when and where?

OK, I’ve watched and I’ve read comments and I totally don’t get the allure of it. Boys and toys, right?

Absolutely glorious. The carnage at the last big turn was impressive, and busting out ‘the Gambler’ was a nice touch.
Now to go find me some wheels…….
