Can Apple Outdo the iPhone? | Newsweek.com

I’m wondering if anything will be as big as last year. I agree with Gruber (see also), last year was pretty huge with the iPhone announcement and was a huge Macworld. This year is likely not going to be as huge, so I’m trying to temper my expectations.

It’s like knowing where the Christmas stash is, but not peeking. If you peek, you will be disappointed. If you don’t peek and keep expectations low, the surprises are great and the day is lovely with happy times and mimosas all around.

I expect a new laptop or revised MacBook. Maybe an Apple TV with some new content announcements. Maybe something around the touch technology that’s not the iPhone. I’ve tried to not read too much and was surprised that Newsweek would devote time to Macworld. I remember the Dark Times of the mid-90s all too well. It is a different era now. Hopefully we’ll see something remarkable. But I’m still trying not to get all hyped up.

What are your expectations for an Apple announcement tomorrow? o

I agree with your expectations. Everything else seems to have been revised not long ago. Maybe something new about the iPod touch since it doesn’t really appeal to many people at the moment (more capacity for the same price?). An upgrade to the mac mini would be cool too.

something that would make my day would be if they finally announce a tablet mac. they have taken long enough to develop that.

Ditto on the sub-notebook. When the MacBook Pros got updated about a year ago and my 3-month old MBP became an old model (Core Duo), I was complaining to an ex-Apple employee who still has friends at Apple in Cupertino. He said, “Don’t upgrade your MBP. Not for 13 months, at least.”

I said, “13 months . . . January 08 . . . MacWorld. What do you KNOW?” He wouldn’t tell me anything. So I’m looking forward to whatever it is!

I am hoping they announce a Penryn Mac Book Pro… I need a faster computer. Plus this new chip sounds sweet.

Unchecked “progress” can result in your bridges falling down behind you as you’re building the road in front of you.

People have to remember that from time to time, there is a keynote where nothing remarkable happens. If fact, it’s necessary. If Apple continues hitting us with those left-right combos of suprises, quality suffers, much like when Leopard was delayed and iPhone development & release was taking the lion’s share of the company’s attention. I just want to see them get their house in order a bit, fix current Leopard flaws (er, I mean, features), and get the iPhone SDK perfected.

This year I’m telling myself to be disappointed. But just to be safe, my co-worker and I are going out at keynote time for sushi buffet so we don’t get RSI in our pointer fingers from refreshing the live feeds. And the resultant food-induced coma will hopefully temper whatever enthusiasm or exasperation we may have.

$200 price cut on 8-core Mac Pros. :)

I was one of the ones who felt betrayed by last year’s keynote, because it didn’t have anything big me, a Mac user who doesn’t care for cell phones (though I’d take one if offered, don’t get me wrong).

I was at the WWDC keynote last year, and everyone who had been to them before was blown away by the amount of cameras and reporters covering the event. It’s good in a way, but it also makes some Mac users who have stuck through the “Dark Times” feel betrayed, when they get product announcements like iPhones and Safari for Windows, that aren’t Mac specific (no matter how good those things may be for Apple).

Personally, I’d like to see some sort of software announcement that I can get excited about. Something that I can afford and that can be used on the Mac gear I already own (and I don’t mean just a new iTunes, though those changes are welcome).

But I’m not holding my breath.

An AppleTV that *is* a TV. Something like a 36″ monitor with the Apple TV built in.

    Revamped cinema displays.

Sub-notebook is a possibility, but not the guarantee that so many are pitching.

iPhone 1.1.3 Everyone will complain that it breaks the hacks.

iTunes movie rentals with bad viewing time restrictions that somehow get pitched as ‘revolutionary’ and will be abandoned in 6 months due to lackluster response.

No more DRM on iTunes. Period.

Crazy random idea: gesture driven OS elements. Think multitouch with your hands and the camera in the monitor.

RAM will still be a factor of 3 too expensive.

    Boom!

I know you’re an Apple Devoutee, but I wondered about your thoughts on HP’s Blackbird.

I have to agree with Blurb in that I LOVE just waiting for the big Tuesday announcements. I do read up on the rumors to get MORE excited - add honey to my PB&J, but what I love most about what Apple does with this anticipation is that it just makes this week better than most others.

My predictions are the thin notebook, maybe to outsmart all the rumor sites - a smaller iPhone ( think nano-esque) and the Apple TV updates. I got an iPhone gift certificate for xmas but am waiting to buy when they upgrade to more storage and 3G - so THAT announcement make this geek very very wet!

The banner on apple.com says “there’s something in the air”.

My guess is that their big announcement is related to some kind of WiMAX device or something. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX)

Or possibly an announcement about a business version of iPhone running on an Apple-owned cell network. There are rumors about Apple quietly buying up old regional cell companies.

I was just at my local Mac dealer today and they have started blowing out their MacBook Pro inventory, which is generally a sign of a speed/features bump to come.

I’m hoping to see a sizable reduction in the cost of the 30″ display — I had the opportunity to compare it to the Samsung Syncmaster 305T, and they appear to be identical though the Samsung is $500 less.

Sub-notebook seems to be what’s generally felt — and I concur. It’s a real gap in the line, and really needed as anyone that does a lot of work on airplanes will attest. I’ve also read some rumors about a Newton announcement coming later in the year….Grant will be so pleased.

Whatever it is, I won’t be satisfied until I get an all in one iPhone, 16 core Mac Pro (must weigh under two pounds!) that runs Ubuntu and plays my ogg vorbis files while flossing my teeth for me. AND a pony. (I can live without the ogg crap, but won’t someone please get me a pony?)

    My predictions are here: http://tinyurl.com/2fmd3c

Steve-notes, the time when all Mac nerds come together to refresh apple.com incessantly. :-]
