Slightly Duck Bill-ish Pipe

February 19th, 2008

Part of the oil machinery out in the desert near Duchesne, Utah. The decayed insulation is awesome.

I could probably camp out and shoot this stuff for days, it’s so full of texture. o

Hi - I trolled over from Dooce one day and your photos have inspired me since. I love gritty stuff like this - do you mind if i ask some questions? Did you edit the lighting on this photo or was this posted as you shot it? When you go to a place like that how many shots do you take?

@Cass, on this shot, the only work I did was a bit of tonal work (curves, levels, color balance/temperature, etc.). I tend to shoot as many shots as I have time or storage. It just depends. I tend to work quickly in light like this, but I try to walk around a bit before shooting. Then I’ll walk around looking through the lens to see if my compositional sense is correct. I try, but don’t always succeed to take several angles of a shot that I’m interested in because I might get a great result from changing it up from my original shot.

When the light is good, it’s hard for me to work slowly, so I try to shoot a lot of coverage. When I shot this, I had maybe 15 minutes of good light left before it disappeared.

Looks more like an alligator with a pacifier in it’s mouth to me… :-)

I love your photos, keep up the good work!

I also love taking texture photos…people miss such wonderful sights every day because they fail to see them..sort of like hearing but not listening.

Thanks for responding to my question! So last question….well for today. What’s your favorite time of day to shoot so the light is just right? I prefer dawn to dusk but I think the light is a different color on the East coast which may be just plain ridiculous.
