Oscar® Picks 2007
February 24th, 2008I know these aren’t all conventional wisdom, but these selections represent who I’d like to win more than who I think will win. I usually pick them right before they call them out on the show, but I wanted to try it this way this year.
Original Screenplay:
Diablo Cody - “Juno”
Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role:
Ruby Dee in “American Gangster”
Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role:
Julie Christie in “Away from Her” (Lionsgate)
(although Ellen Page might get it for “Juno”; the academy loves younger actresses, just like Hollywood)
Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role:
Javier Bardem in “No Country for Old Men”
Performance by an Actpr in a Leading Role:
Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood”
Director:
Paul Thomas Anderson - “There Will Be Blood”
Best Picture:
“There Will Be Blood”
Anybody else got some picks? o

I have no selections, but I do have to say that I’m again shamed by how few recent movies I’ve seen.

I want Johnny Depp to win, but I haven’t seen Sweeney Todd. I just think he got screwed for Pirates of the Caribbean, and they should make it up to him.

I’m thinking Johnny Depp might be a spoiler win,,, which I would love! He’s been nominated twice before and even though I didn’t see Sweeney Todd I heard his performance was amazing and he received a Golden Globe for it. Maybe the Academy will think it’s “his turn.” I also would love it if Juno won best picture but I know that won’t happen,,, it was just such a great film.

I am loving Marion Cotillard right now (only because she looked nice and different at the Baftas), so it would be nice to see a French actor win an oscar…also agree on the fabulous Julie Christie and expect DDLewis to recieve…

I would like anyone with the name of Diablo Cody to win. Oh hell yes.

Yep, here.

I too have seen very few films this year, but I have read No Country and I think the Coen Bros are brilliant so I say NCFOM at for Best Pict.
Diablo Cody went to University of Iowa and I enjoy her column in EW, so she gets my pick for best screenplay.
When I read No Country, I thought it would take a particular talent to adapt it to sceen, so I again pick the Coens for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Am I to infer from this list that you’ve acutally seen all of these films? I really don’t want to hate you for this, so instead, I’m going to as, how? HOW! have you managed to get out and see all these movies and raise a toddler? I just don’t get it…
Also, I want Javier Bardem to win anything that will get him to the podium and talking in that lovely accent of his. Should he get the mic, listen very closely. He’s sure to call out my name with longing and fervor because he wants me that bad.

I gotta go with No Country for best pic and best adapted screenplay. Have you seen it? It’s a thing of beauty:

Ellis’s line when Ed Tom enters his house: Min here
I assume they’re copying McCarthy’s style, but I haven’t read the novel.

years ago i ran a small indie movie theater.. saw every movie we book, 90% of them were oscar nominations. back then I could call every winner with stunning accuracy…. now in the whole year I saw a total of 4 movies. Juno was the only one that was nominated. The rest were kid films.
I see far less movies when I have to pay for them. (when I ran the theater, I got paid to watch them._

I’ve only seen “There Will Be Blood” and “No Country For Old Men” and “Michael Clayton”. I’m just guessing on the others. If we didn’t live close to family, I wouldn’t have seen those two.
I’m offline for the next few hours so I don’t get tempted to peek. Happy Academy Awards, people.

Hey Jon, looks like you called it on Javier! I’ve got your list up to see how you do throughout the show.

I hope Persepolis wins best animated film.
February 24th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Rats, Johnny lost. Damn.
February 24th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Ahhhhhh. Hell.
I hope that Paul Thomas Anderson keeps making movies. I’m feeling like he’s the new Martin Scorcese. At least Once won for best song.

There Will Be Blood is mindblowing and may I just say that D. Day Lewis is amazingly young looking for someone who is 50. I’m thinking best score might go to Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. He nailed it.
Haven’t seen No Country…yet and am looking forward to it. Although it’s gotten mixed reviews and only a two-star rating by viewers in Vancouver, I can’t imagine a collaboration between the Coen Bros. and Cormac McCarthy resulting in anything but magnificence.

DDL getting best actor always makes sense to me. He’s always great no matter who’s film he’s in. I think that “There Will Be Blood” hadn’t been around long enough to convince everyone yet so it didn’t get its due. At least Daniel did.
I thought we were about to see an upset to Cuba Gooding Jr’s all time greatest speech when Tildin Swinton started talking about Clooney’s nipples. I was in the floor dying that she even went there.

Falling Slowly won best song, despite the nomination of THREE songs from Enchanted. Enchanted is a cute movie and all, but it didn’t even come close to Once musically. It made me smile. And Jon Stewart dragged out Marketa Irglova to give her part of the speech when she actually listened to the walk off music and wasn’t given her chance to speak. And she did a beautiful little speech.
And Tilda Swinton totally cracked me up.

3 out of 7 is horrible.
I was deeply affected by There Will Be Blood. I liked No Country for Old Men, but it just didn’t get inside me.

I love that Once won for original song. You and Heather should see that film just for the music. How charming that Jon Stewart brought Marketa out to give her thanks.
