Buttars asks black church to forgive perceived racist remark - Salt Lake Tribune

Love the language being used in the media like “perceived” and “possible” and “potential”. Utah still has it’s collective head stuck in 1949. There seems to be an awful lot of apologists for Mr. Buttars. I wonder if they’ve gotten any calls or emails about this? o

“And to do it off of familiar territory” indeed. The visual image of that very white man in that very black pastor’s church is just priceless. I bet he WAS shaking like a leaf.
Which all begs the question of just why a place where African-Americans are gathered together is such unfamiliar territory to someone who is supposedly representing them.

The allegedly offending comment was way too innocuous to merit the ensuing media lynch mob mentality.

The other day I read a comment suggesting that this event was a media conspiracy to get Buttars because he won’t support the gay advocate positions. At first I scoffed, but now I am beginning to wonder.

@“Honest Person”, yes, the GAYS are to blame! Give me a break, Capn’ Comment Spammer. (ed. note: this is the same clown who spammed comments here earlier as “truth speaker”)

Your comment stands a better chance of staying up if you keep your homophobia and latent racism to yourself. Why don’t you leave Utah if it’s becoming too liberal for you? I’d recommend Idaho, but they have a closeted, publicly in denial gay US Senator, so there’s that.

FYI, Buttars wasn’t lynched. He was brought into the late-20th century. Now if only we could get you there… Lynching implies that he was killed. He appears to be alive.

Stop playing the victim and stop being a fundamentalist pussy.

Shorter Buttars: “I forgive you for misunderstanding me. Now you forgive me.”

Tehe. Honest Person, i am not surprised a man capable of a racist comment is also anti-gay. and yes, we gay folks are out to get a man like that out of office. its called speaking out as citizens!

    had to respond.

Is racism ever innocuous? I think not. Nor is hateful heterocentricist homophobia.

Does it really matter whether the media are going after Buttars because he’s racist or whether its because he’s homophobic? Either way he’s a man who shouldn’t be involved in government in any fashion.

Even though I am gay myself, that has nothing to do with my, or anyone else’s desire to discredit Buttars and expose him for the reprehensible character he is. I am equally upset at his racist and his homophobic actions and comments - neither one is worse.

There are a few things I do not miss about Utah.

Buttars is one. The snow is another.

What do I love about living in Oregon? It’s not illegal for me to be QUEER. And to *express my queerness*.

And hey, I recently figured out you lived in Brigham City. I am probably just dense, but I can’t seem to find an email address for you. If I could, I would probably send attempts-at-commiserating-about-Box-Elder-County. I got out in 1994, and my life has improved ever since.

    Hallelujah.
