Lonely Buds

February 26th, 2008

We had another snowstorm last week and I ventured out to capture the aftermath after being goaded by Heather to get off my ass. While this winter has been a long one with record breaking (and much needed) snowstorms, the trees are starting to bud.

This one was taken with my 70-200 f4 that I got for Christmas. I’m still getting used to the extra weight of the lens and how to hold the camera to get clear shots. o

    lovely and delicate

I’m both chilled and warmed by those blue tones. Totally fabulous.

How do you do the shadow effect around the edges? Please share!

    Great photo, btw. As usual.

Something I learned is to always try to keep your shutter speed about the same as your focal length. So if you’re zoomed all the way out to 200mm, try to keep your shutter speed at 1/200 sec or faster. One of those rules of thumb that we all know about, but not where we heard it from.

I read both sites daily, always entertaining.

    Thanks!

@Megan, I’ll post about that soon, I promise!

    @Dale, great tip!

My dad told me this morning Alta has recorded over 500 inches this winter – the most in over 15 years! Great for me, who visits to do some skiing and see the family, not so great for the rest of you who have to deal with it daily.

You always take such fantastic shots.

I’ve been eyeing this lens but since I can’t afford the IS right now was debating the non-IS version but wasn’t sure if it would be a waste considering the bulk of this lens. Was this shot taken with or without the IS lens?

i love how the shades of blue are reflected in the tiny droplets of snow. i am shopping around for my first macro lens right now. any suggestions?

Here at Tahoe, we’ve had record snowfall as well, and NO buds yet, dammit. I need spring.

I read both of you and enjoy your photo’s a lot. Have you tried a noise machine? At 2am someone in the neighborhood might be coming in or going out and waking her up with a car door slamming. I don’t even travel without a sleep machine because everything (including my dog) wakes me up if I don’t have the ocean going in the back ground.

  11. Gorgeous. Awesome Christmas gift, by the way.

This is stunning. Do I detect the use of Lightroom?

  13. Sally Fulton says:

Hard to imagine the cold sitting here in 80 degree weather. I remember how it feels to ache for spring though. The new lens will get you through the dog days of winter though. Always worked for me!

Is that natural vignette or was it enhanced in photoshop. Love the blue. Very nice.
