A Little Furrocious
March 5th, 2008Taken this past Sunday while on our hike. Both Chuck and Coco have this move they do when running through fresh snow. Full speed ahead, they’ll dip their noses down and scoop up the snow, flinging a bit up in the air or eating some of it. I took about 60 shots of them trying to capture this and I got very lucky with this one.
We are either going to be so tightly bound to Coco because of what we’ve been through (lots of late night let outs, illness, etc.) or we’re going to need puppy therapy similar to the yuppies in Best in Show.
Or we’ll just eat her. o

My dog does the same thing in the snow…and I hope you are through the worst with her training, um, issues. I was so envious of you, and now I don’t want a new puppy at all. My husband owes you a thank you gift!

We rescued a puppy who was in rough shape, took forever to potty train, was sick for months, and was generally a royal pain in the ass. There were moments when I wondered why on earth we’d made this decision.
Once we got his health straightened out and he figured out the whole going to the bathroom outside deal, it’s like a switch went on in his brain. He’s turned into the sweetest, calmest dog we’ve ever had. Hopefully, things will turn around for you.
Not that this is any consolation when you’re scrubbing poop out of a crate at three am.

Once she becomes a great dog, you’ll totally look back at photos and think about what an adorable puppy she was. All of those miserable moments just fade into distant memories. Kind of like babies in that way.

This shot is amazing. It wasn’t till I clicked on it that I realized her back feet aren’t touching the ground! Too cool! My first American Eskimo was insane. She ate our underwear unless I secured it beyond reach and she still occasionally got it. Ate used kleenex unless I bought special trash baskets. Barked at every leaf that fell and would periodically jump on my bed or couch and root around till she bumped all the pillows to the floor and look very ashamed when asked what happened. My clothes, furniture, floors were covered with long white fur. I told my sister “I would never get another Eskimo again ever.” When I cried, she licked my tears and listened to my sorrows. When she died I mourned her loss with a pain that ached to my bones and cut into my flesh. When I saw another Eskimo at a Petsmart, I claimed her so fast my husband’s head spun. She’s full of quirks, problems and Eskimo insanity and many problems I don’t even want to think about. I’ll keep working with her and loving her because she’s brought a light into a dark spot on my soul that gives me joy just by being alive.

I’m in puppy hell right along with ya. I keep telling myself that this too shall pass . . . hopefully before I go crazy.

This is the total opposite of how “The Bitch” is in the snow. She tenderly paws at it to test the temperature then walks only as far as she needs to until she finds a place to pee. Then, like an old lady without her walker, she follows her own footprints back to dry ground.
Puppy troubles or not, I’m envious of your playful dog.

We’ve had lots of problems with one of our dogs. Our first dog, it was like a cake walk. And now with our newest dog (not a puppy anymore at 4 yrs but I still consider him the puppy), he was a pain to train. whining all night wanting to play when we wanted to sleep. And then he started having stomach issues and then was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. His seizures would wake us up at 2am and we’d be up with him for hours calming him and waiting for him to come down. I do feel more attached to him because of this. I always worry when we are out too late or away from the house too long. But oh well. I just love him to death. So that is just part of that i guess.
coco will probably grow out of it. maybe. hopefully.

Great movie.

I love the way she’s looking at you… “Did you get the shot, Dad?”
Great photo, Jon. I envy both you and Heather for your artistic eye and skill with the camera. Oh, and because you have the cutest puppy ever!

And if it gets to the point where you’re choosing herbs for the Coco stew, ship her off to us in Florida. Our 4-year-old Australian Cattle Dog would love a new companion to romp with on the beach.

Dogs seem to be the only ones who love the snow! We are getting what feels like our 30th snow storm in a row in Toronto and me and all my dog park friends are whining about it. Meanwhile, our dogs are all romping around a la Coco, having the best time. I wish I could get as excited about it as they do!

What you need is to get your asses to Austin and bring your own hotel room decor—blankets, draperies, throw rugs—and include this photo, which I suggest be placed on the tank of the toilet. A little time away and you’ll miss her terribly.
And P.S.?
You still have all that f***ing snow?!?
Jesus. I’m about ready to start praying for y’all.

Wonderful picture! She’s so adorable, in spite of her ‘issues.’ C’mon, admit it Jon, you’d miss her if you ate her!
My lab mix plays like that in the snow too. I miss him. (I don’t miss the hair all over the place.) He’s currently visiting relatives (seriously!)

Just remember, when mommy and daddy make love, it’s a beautiful thing.
Sometimes.

We met at Starbucks… we were both on our Macs. Fitting.
YOU GET THE BUSY BEE I’VE GOT TO TRIM HER WHISKERS!
OK I’m done.

Probably the best thing to do, is go to Puppy training class or go to a Potty Training Seminar at PetSmart. The seminar’s are free, I work at PetSmart and thought (I used to train my own dogs) that I had all the tricks, but the seminars are good because of socializing and they help with the potty issues faster than just doing it yourself.
I have aggressive dogs, so it’s a real treat to have my house dog trained before they hit one year.

I love how she seems to be watching you as she’s being all crazy-like, as if to say ~ watch me! watch me! are you getting this?!
I agree that puppies are like babies in that you forget how bad it can be. Except that I don’t have a baby yet, but it’s what I imagine it would be like. We got our dog Porter (an Alaskan Husky of the sled-dog variety) at 7 weeks, and is about a year & a half old now. My husband has already forgotten about the sleepless nights, the endless puppy crying, and taking him outside constantly, usually involving statements like ~ just pee already! He (my husband) thinks we need another dog to keep Porter company. I am of the opinion that we have the baby, see how it all goes, and THEN….MAYBE we can get another puppy.
Hope things improve for you soon

That is a spectacular shot.
It took me a moment to realize she was in motion when you snapped.
It’s so perfect it looks like she froze in mid air for the shot, like America’s next top model dog!

Don’t look at those losers, Coco… YOU LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEE!
I am a geek that names my cars… my first VW Beetle was named Beatrice. When it died a sudden death mere 8 months later, the new car was named Kipper. Cause he’s a winner…

Nice Picture!

I really wanted to say, ” I love dogs.” But I hit return too soon.

I do know of a great recipe for “Hot dog”
Willing to share…. no not really. I just love this good looking creature of yours.
Greetings

That’s awesome. If we had snow like that I’m sure that my dog would never leave the house. She’d just do her business inside. She’s not an all weather dog. Very texture sensitive that one.

I loved my mix-of-quite-a-lot Zoe from the moment we picked her out at the shelter at only a month old, but we didn’t really completely bond until the night she became very sick from getting three puppy shots in one day. Shaking like crazy and burning up with a fever, she stayed by my side as I watched her all night and gave her little sips of Children’s Motrin (as the vet recommended). She’s nine and a half years old now and the most loyal and protective being I’ve ever known.
Once Coco stops growing and settles into being a dog instead of a puppy, things will be better.
