No Doubt Flyer

April 8th, 2008

From the last, best gig that Herschel played before we broke up. Thanks for posting this giddygirlie!

For the encore, No Doubt played Journey’s “Any way you want it (that’s the way you need it)” with Angelo Moore from Fishbone dressed in a Tiger costume. It was incredible. I still think No Doubt should have covered that song. Goosebumps. o

No Doubt doing “Anywhere You Want It”? Man, there are lots of reasons I never want to go back to 1993 (I was in high school then), but that is one giant reason I wish that Doc Brown and his DeLorean would come screaming into the alleyway behind my office right now.

Oh, and BTW, awesome poster. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the Swim Herschel Swim logo before (but maybe I just wasn’t paying attention).

I can remember having No Doubt play at our high school on a Friday night before they were famous. I know, this ages me, but it is still one of the coolest concerts in memory.

I was all “wow, that’s so cool, I wish I had been there!” until I realized that I would’ve been 2 and probably wouldn’t have cared. Whatever, I still love No Doubt.

    High School = No Doubt

    No doubt?

I came across this flyer last year while going through boxes of my old stuff. Oh, the memories…what a great night.

Was that really the last gig we played?

    Only $11!! What a bargain.

@patatomic, the last good one on the road we played. We played several more after that. I believe we did something like 12 weeks of two and three gig shows all over the place, including three LA trips, one SF trip and a weekend at Cedar Breaks.

I remember being very close to a nervous breakdown after that 12 weeks.

How odd… I was at that show. I was on a “first date”. What a blast from the past.

I should see if I can find my copy of the junior high newspaper we covered Swim Herschel Swim in. We put the pic of the three handed guy in as a watermark. (He did have three hands, right? Am I on crack?)

I also remember KJQ mentioning some of your concerts.

Wow. Such a blast to the past.

did you meet them when you played the show?

Awesome! I think you should start a new band. Leta can sing back-up (as long as the songs are about princesses) and Heather can dance around with her cool long arms.

Your band played with No Doubt? WOWAWESOME!!!!!!!!!! I’m stoked they are starting to record again.

“Tragic Kingdom” was my first ever CD purchase. Right after the Pocahontas soundtrack.

    I was 10.

Extremely cool! I love No Doubt. I loved them from the moment I heard their music. Although Gwen S. is very talented, I think there’s an edge to the band that is somewhat lacking in her music.

    John…

this has nothing to do with No Doubt…wanted to pass this band on to you and Heather. Think you’ll like them. I just recently discovered them and am really likin’ what I have heard.

And…they have a song called “Like Bacon Sundays”. How could that be bad in any way, right?

Oh myyyyyy! I was at that show. I was 18, the year I graduated from high school. It was L.A. fashion to show up late to shows (that, and traffic) so I wasn’t there for your set!

I am sad now…but I bet I couldn’t have convinced my friend Vinnie not to stop at Jack in the Box beforehand, nor to drive there any faster. My apologies, and regrets.

If Heather likes this I would LOVE to know. I keep hearing the Feelies over and over when I listen to these guys!

I totally remember Swim Herschel Swim. Did you guys every play with Catfische? Or Hoo Ray Who? I think I remember playing a gig with your band… back in the day. Tell me if I’m remembering right?

Have you played any SHS for Leta? I hope one day she realizes how cool her parents are for all these cool things you have done.

We did get to hang with them a little bit on this trip. We went shopping on Melrose after driving up from OC and people were gawking at Gwen. They were all super nice and it took about .05 of a second to know that Gwen was going to be famous.

I remember Gwen asking me about being Mormon and being married so young. The nice famous people are the ones who deserve every bit of success they get.

Sidenote: I remember wanting to take Herschel away from heavy ska and move towards pop songs. That didn’t fly so well with just about everybody in the band. That move is precisely what No Doubt did that brought them their massive breakthrough. Just saying. Definitely no sour grapes at all, at that point Swim Herschel Swim had hit a huge wall of personality and opposing forces.

First, I love Heather first, then you. However you made giant strides with the Fishbone reference.

I might accept the clogs after that.
