Crotchy
April 10th, 2008Taken on Raccoon Day. I’m kind of surprised how much I’m using the 70-200. I’m liking the results.
I’m not a fan of this tree. The fruit looks like rabbit shit. o

Jon,
I was just out taking pictures of a tree in our backyard, but without nearly the same result. Using yours as a yardstick to measure my own, I see now that all I was missing was color, composition, good natural light, and perhaps a little focus.
Ours is a walnut tree that also drops rabbit shit, if the rabbits were all Bugs Bunny from the episode where he was transformed into the monstrous, hulking Hyde-like version of himself.
Rabbit shit musings aside, I always enjoy your photos.

Crotchy or crotchety?

i’m surprised how little i’m using my 70-200 lately. i’ve been sticking with the 50mm primarily just because it’s easy to haul around. however, the bokeh from the 70-200 is the best i’ve seen, so when i can, i like it for portraits outside.
i really really need something in the middle, like the 24-70, but my SUV needs new tires first.
you know. priorities.

I like “Crochity” better. ‘Specially since the tree is sh*ty.
Enjoyed reading the Wall Street Journal this morning. Congrats to Heather! Congrats to you too! I’m surprised they didn’t mention her photography. Sometimes her photos say more than her writings….. Your photogs are great also. Can’t wait to hear how you photograph Leta doing ballet or softball or something like that. Though you have caught the dogs doing some pretty awesome things. I’m still working on trying to get the ball going into the mitt or hitting that bat or catching all the dust in a slide to home plate.

That rabbit shit comment made me laugh outloud in the library.
I hated that shit, too.

Ew. What kind of a tree is it, do you know?
Here in Portland the city planted gingko trees at streetside. Gingkos are dioecious (some female, some male). You would think they would check to make sure to plant only boys, because when gingko fruit drops on the ground in the autumn and starts to rot, it literally smells like vomit.
Seriously stomach-turning stuff. You look around for the bum stretched out in the gutter and realize it’s all crushed fruit underfoot.

I like your new site and all the lovely photos you’ve been taking lately. You remind me of my daughter, always seeing things up there, yep, above eye level where most of us forget to look;)

Is it a Privet Tree? Because my neighbor has one, and it is the only tree in the world that I actively despise. We call it a Privy Tree because it is always dropping shit.

Hi, I’m a long time reader, no time commenter. I am hoping you can give me some insiders view on the 70-200. Right now I shoot portraits mainly with my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and my Canon 50mm f1.4 on a Canon Xti. I think for outdoors I need something a bit longer and have been eyeing the 70-200 f4 for awhile, but read mixed reviews. I need it to be portable as I do childrens photography and I’m constantly moving to keep up with them…no tripod ever. I need it to be fast enough to capture the moving children and light enough to carry for hours. Do you have any pros/cons you would share that might help make my decision. I would love the f2.8, but the $$ and weight are an issue right now.
Thank you so much for any info you might share.
