Wearing the

April 18th, 2008

Took this one in Los Angeles back in August.

A note: I generally do not try to represent my photos as reality. I am going for an emotion or sensory representation that has nothing to do with facts. If you don’t dig on the images I post, that’s fine, but I like to make my colors all jacked up and crazy. If it’s not your thing, I understand. Just don’t crap in my front yard and run away. I’ll sic Coco after you. As you may know, that dog is furrrrrrocious. o

To bad there has to be haters and that they think they should let you in on their hate. Tell them all to go stick it….well actually you did already.

I LOVE your photos and their “jacked up and crazy colors” that is what keeps me coming back!

*fan of the jacked up and crazy* THANKS!

    I dig it.

I love this photo. It looks aged. Very cool.

Jacking with the colors and stuff is part of what makes it art. Realism is fine, but a long way from necessary.
Maybe the pooping in your yard is their performance art. That should in no way prevent Coco’s artistic ass biting.
    Awesome pic! Keep them coming.

My husband and I pass a sign on the way to our in-laws here in Texas that reads; “Guns, Donuts, Day Care” — I don’t know why, but that always cracks me up!

And hey, I think your picts are cool. I’m so artistically challenged that I just envy your creative ability.

    Another vote for jacked-up crazy.

(The Coco threat made me laugh. We all know dogs are just as likely at eat the random poo lying on the ground as do anything else. “Wow, what’s this? Hey. who brought treats?”)

Is there a jacked-up crazy fanclub?

Your photos are so ethereal and other-worldly I dare not disturb their essence by breathing. I gasp, the computer screen transfixes me for I don’t know how long, I finally click away from your site, and I exhale. Then I come back several times a day if only for the visual thrill that triggers holding my breath. Beautiful, dude.

If you can point Coco towards your yard-crappers asses while their pants are still around their ankles, it’s harder for them to run away. Unless they’re wearing a kilt, or a skirt. In other words, Coco… go for the bare-assed men first, women and Scots second.

I love the colors and effects. Jack ’til it hurts.

    Shalini Says:

The photos are really cool, and like previously stated by another commenter, I wish I was even one tenth as creative as you and Heather!

Keep the photos coming, and let Coco bite the pooper’s asses, if not at least let Chuck glare at them!

I’d join the jacked-up crazy fanclub. Hell, I’d love to take a lesson from you on how you get your photos to look so interesting.

Poopers, beware of the wrath of Coco.

Me again. I’ve been visiting here off and on since you called Wil Wheaton a whore. Actually, I think it was just that he was whoring his website (for a Bloggie, I think), and you were calling him out for that. Either way, whoring was unfolding, and at its core was Wheaton.

I remember when you posted the following, and it offered some good insight into the whole jacking process… at least one aspect of it. Thought I’d take it upon myself to link to it.

How to Turn an Ordinary Photo Into an Extraordinary Photo

So I’m now whoring, but for you; please don’t bandy my name about (oddly, it does rhyme with Wil Wheaton).

Who’s been dissing the photos? Huh?

I like what you do with them - it’s creative, pretty cool, and stands out well. If certain people want real-life shots, they can go take them. If there’s a particular shot I don’t love, so what? You’re not here to please me, or any particular person (or pooper!). Jeez some people bug me. Same people who send Heather hate mail I’ll guess, and none of them would have the balls to say anything to your faces.

Who cares, ignore them - I enjoy you sharing your photographs, you’re pretty darn talented. More please!!

    Maybe I am mistaken but…

Isn’t the whole point of cameras as a medium to create a kind of false visual reality anyway? I mean pretty much everything we see using film has been enhanced in some way these days. Not to mention I can look around and see reality all day it is a nice visual escape to look at non realistic photos.

A little bird tells me you may be selling prints soon. True?

    Christine Says:

I totally understand where you’re coming from, Jon. I’ve received subtle criticisms in the past for my photos (usually something like “what do you do to your photos to get such intense colors” or “that’s not how the picture looked when you took it, right?) It used to get to me, esp since it mostly came from people I knew, rather than random visitors. And for the most part, it’s usually just a slight levels adjustment. I used to do adjusting in the darkroom, so why not in photoshop? If Ansel Adams were alive and shooting digital today, he’d be using photoshop, too. Do people really think his photos were straight from the film to paper without any tweeking? Because he did tweek.

I’m so over the hardcore purists who think their way is the only way. Art is what you want it to be.

    Press on!

Isn’t the first enhancement anyone uses flash?

I like these colors, and the sign makes me wish I spoke Spanish (damned middle America schooling).

I have to pretend it says something like “Family Pants. These most likely will fit your mama. If she’s not around and you’ve sufficiently irritated your father, he’ll put them on.”

Could you imagine siccing a puppy Aussie Shepard on someone? They’d be all ,”Hey! Stop snuggling into my neck! Stop panting in my face! Stop whining at the door!” he he he cracking myself up this morning.

    Translation for the Spanish impared:
Clothes for men, women and children
    Quality and low prices

I guess growing up in Texas has it’s advantages.

IMHO, Art is about representing your vision as candidly as possible. You do that, and you do it extremely well. As a photo editor, I see a lot of subpar photographic Art. Your work is thoughtful, earnest, modern, and emotionally charged. Reality is for journalists, Art is for artists.

    Sherry Says:

Yikes! I think I am in trouble now. I wonder if my comment was read as a negative remark about your photo. My intentions were not at all to be negative. Really. I think of your photos as expressionistic. I humbly apologize if that is how my crazy sense of humor came across. In person, my comments would have been attached with silly giggling. I really didn’t mean to express a dislike. Yikes!

  22. 22
    Amy Says:

I like your photos BECAUSE they are crazy. They make me want to smoke a whole lot of pot.

…and you’ve lit the fire under my ass to go buy Aperture.

    La Emme Says:

The colors you use are amazing.. and that’s what makes your photographs so diverse and attractive! We want COLOR.

    Cheerio!

  24. 24
    Bipolarlawyercook Says:

Hmm. I don’t ever manipulate my photos except for correcting exposure and cropping, and I tend to think that most people who mess around with colors and filters and all that other newfangled stuff are just compensating for failing to capture interesting subjects in an interesting way. BUT, your photos, I like. They’re interesting to begin with, at least, and art when you’re done.

    So there.

    megan Says:

As a fellow tinkerer, I enjoy the saturated colors and manipulation. What you can do in Aperture and photoshop is half the fun! http://www.flickr.com/photos/meganhalpern/2316232145/in/set-72157604041250665/
