Hi Jon,

Re. your caption that "nothing says we gave up more than plastic bags in trees," you may be interested in this mind-blowing article from Best Life Magazine. In it, Casey describes an area in the Pacific Ocean that is essentially a plastics dump, known as the Eastern Garbage Patch. Astoundingly, the Patch is twice the size of Texas - and growing.

Our oceans are turning into plastic...are we?

I was thinking as I was reading this post that I was amazed while I was shopping this past weekend over how many major department stores are selling cloth shopping bags now. It was pretty impressive. My sister even bought one to hide all her purchases from her husband! See - saving the earth AND stimulating the economy. YAY cloth bags!!!!

Plastic bags in trees make me CRAZY! There are a bunch of stores near my house including a Wal-Mart, Albertsons and K-Mart and on windy days there are plastic bags hanging, blowing, and drifting around our entire neighborhood and it makes me want to scream - "Humans, you should learn to use garbage cans AND fill them only to where THE LIDS CAN CLOSE!!! DON'T OVER STUFF YOUR RECYLE BINS WITH GARBAGE!!!" I could go on and on, but I will restrain myself for now.

It's funny because last winter my boyfriend saw a plastic bag in one of the trees outside his apartment. He was really pissed off because he thought he would have to look at that depressing sight all winter. Then it moved. Turns out it was a great blue heron nestled up in the shape of a plastic bag. I guess sometimes nature surprises even us cynics.

I have thought about this issue as I drive through UT canyons and see the plastic hanging from branches, too high to be retreived. So the latest solution is to return to the use of paper bags? The reason "we" started using the plastic bags was because we needed to save the trees that were being cut down to make the paper bags.....and so it goes. How about re-usable cloth bags? Just a thought.

I disagree, dana wyzard. As we all know, God created earth for humans to live on and rule over all of animal kind. So, if we were not here, nothing would be here.

Or maybe, just maybe, there's an itty bitty little bush spider sniper that is using that bag as his camouflage.

let's face it. Humans are filth mongers and the world would be a better place if we weren't here to ruin it for the rest of creation.

Very "American Beauty."

Jon, I met you and Heather at the book signing---I was the one who in the blinding light of your celebrity compared you guys to The Beatles. Anyway, just wanted to say I hope you had an awesome time in NYC! You guys deserve it!
