Rusty Spikes
June 23rd, 2008Taken while waiting to parasail. I can’t decide if these were used as hangers for belongings or as a warning to scare off timid tourists.
One note, one that I’m sure I’ll sing again and again: My photos aren’t journalistic they are expressionistic. I don’t represent them as such. If I were shooting news, I’d adhere to a strict code of bare minimum tweak.
Also, thanks for taking the time to register for comments. You shoulda seen the crap I deleted over the weekend. Feels really good. o

Mmm… a tetanus shot waiting to happen.

I always enjoy your photos.

Very awesome. Reminds me of a dream where I impaled something like that into my face. Deliberately.
I love your photos, Jon, you have an impressive eye. Would love to borrow your perspective for a few hours or at least share a photo shoot someday! Keep it up!

With regard to timid tourist warning activity, I see a sudden spike.

I actually registered just to say I think that picture is amazing. (Also, the kids are napping. I don’t know what else to do with the extra time.)

I really enjoy the perspectives you take in your photos. I try the same with my own. You have inspired me to go digital. I thought I was a die-hard film person but….. I’m trying to figure out if I should put less money into the camera base Nikon (D40 vs. D60) and buy better lenses.
Good job on the comments also. I learned a silly rhyme a long time ago that has proven to get me through some trolls of all types…. “Everything I say and do is a statement about me and not about you”….
It’s their shit, but you already knew that….
Keep up the good work. I appreciate the honesty both you and your wife offer in the success this has brought you and the unexpected emotional costs it brings. Takes courage….

What Janice said is so TRUE!

Tweaking photos has always been a reality, and an important part of photography. Before photoshop it was simply done in the darkroom.

Yay! Registering rocks! Love this one!

First, I love the depth in this photo. And the rust. Something about photographs of dirty, rusty, texture-y things makes me happy. So thanks!
Secondly, WHOA. I definitely learned something new today (re: trolls). Crazy Internets! You and Heather do honest work that provides hope and creative inspiration to lots of people. I hope you both know that people who insult so viciously are just doing it because somebody didn’t love them enough. We fans have a hard time dealing with them because we don’t want you to feel hurt by nastiness. I have a feeling you both have the chutzpah, though. Your work is lovely and you have a great eye. In the end, as long as you enjoy doing it, that’s all that matters.

What a cool close up. I sort of feel like I should get a tetanus shot now.

Those are some scary spikes. Great shot.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Those spikes would certainly scare me off! Yowza!

New to your site….long time fan of Heathers
Just want to say LOVE your work…wish I had
half your talent…

I just want you to know that you look JUST LIKE Chaka from Land of the Lost.
June 24th, 2008 at 10:33 am
I was just going to say the same thing that leesavee said: The resemblance to Chaka is uncanny!
Truthfully, Jon, I get a great amount of enjoyment from Dooce and Blurbomat, and they’re both sites I visit every day. I am so pleased that you and Heather are able to make your living from doing what you love — what a success story — and hope that you are able to do it for a long time to come. You both are an inspiration to those of us who are looking for more creativity to balance the negativity, and I always get that from the Armstrongs. And since I have no children, I get a dose of the parenting from you as well. I do have family and friends who are more than willing to share that duty, but it’s more fun when I don’t have messes to clean up along with the fun part!
I only wish I had known that you were having such troubles when you were here in San Diego earlier this year: I could have at least handled Chuck for you! Please come back sometime!

I do not get photos like that. Never got why people would like a picture of some nails. I like pics of nature and trees and such. But that is just me.

Some do and some don’t…get it I mean.

Love this one.
I have a Rusty Hinge near the beginning of my Flickrstream. Go check it out. Rust is COOL.
