I always get excited when we see our first palm tree. It's a visual signature that we've arrived, that life here is different. I can almost feel the warmth in my bones as I first spot the distinctive leaves.

Years ago, we drove to Florida for the first time. We stopped at a gas station (not far from Destin, coincidentally) and it was a warm, sunny and breezy day. I was staring at my wife - I do that a lot; she's OK with it - and I could almost feel the wind in the palm leaves. I can still hear it in my head over 10 years later. Definitely one of those magic moments when all is right with the world.

Thanks for facilitating the memory!

(And kudos on the registration thing. I got bombed with complaints when I moved to moderated comments on my blog...but considering the trolls I had to deal with over the years, it was a necessary and worthwhile move. Maybe we won't need stuff like this after people learn to behave themselves.)

Damn. Here I was enjoying the beautiful temperate day here in Southwestern PA. Then I saw this photo. Just can't beat blue skies AND a palm tree. Nice photo!

That's a different looking palm tree than the ones near where I grew up in California.

And by "near where I grew up" I mean the two planted by our local In-n-Out.
