Palm of Some Kind

June 26th, 2008

Or maybe a fern?

These were all over our neighborhood in Destin. When I took this, a breeze had kicked up and in the mid left you can see the blurs caused by the breeze moving the fronds.

I love how these show light. Really lovely and such. o

Yep. Sago’s are beautiful. But they’re not really palms! They’re actually cycads which is a group of plants so very old that they were around with the dinosaurs. You know, come to think of it, they have developed their spiky, spiky fronds in order to discourage dinosaur munching! Isn’t that cool?
Sorry. I have a thing for primitive plants. You should see my ferns.

Meant to say “MAY have developed” of course.
I’m blaming that one on the over-the-counter cold medication I’m enjoying at the moment.

I saw you have been taken some “heat” for your pictures being simple, but I have to say this one is really an awesome picture of “simple.” That would be a great, framed picture.

And by “taken,” I meant “taking.” My Southern accent took over my writing skills.

    I think that’s a Frondus Nonsequitus.

I also recognize that breeze. It blew through here one day a blurred up a picture I was taking using a long exposure. Later, it overflowed and flooded our laundry room. Wait, not your breeze… our washing machine. And it didn’t mess up my picture, but it did break down the door, when it blew through.

I rather like the curves in this and the bokeh. What lens were you using? The parts in focus confuse me as I’m not seeing a focal plane where I’d expect. Maybe it was the breeze?

@Lauren M., I’ll add it shortly. You are awesome.

@ABMann, 24-70mm. When I was reviewing shots to post, this one jumped out for the very reason you state; the focal plane is jacked and I didn’t even use a selective focus lens!

Dude, we seriously have the same wavelengths. I will send you a palm I did in Mexico, too.

    Yours is better though.

    It’s a Sago…Cycas revoluta to be exact.

    Lovely capture amigo.

    Thank you.

Just an FYI - DO not let children or your dogs go near that Sago. They are poisonous as all get out.
