Patrick Sullivan’s Saloon
October 6th, 2008Taken in Old City, Knoxville, Tennesse. This building seems less southern than western. Sure, at one point, Knoxville was the west. But this style building is something I’d expect to see in Wyoming or Nevada.
I could probably do some work on this to make it look really old; remove the power lines, the car, the street, etc. etc. But I kind of like how this building sits.
Note the circular brick portholes in the side of the building. I wonder if there was an influential architect or some bigger reason that these are all over town on the older buildings. Like glass was cheaper if cut round or something. Anybody out there have any ideas? o

Hey, Jon, as you said, Tennessee was once the ‘west’, and it was as wild and wooly as the real deal. Gun holes, maybe??
Now I am really curious, I can’t find any information on round windows in Knox county. There is a Round Window Liquor Store that keeps coming up in searches.
Not sure I like the bigger font size. It adds a sense of hierarchy but I am a fan of the smaller text that you and Heather both have on your sites.

@meowsk, I’ve been waiting for people to notice. You are outvoted on the type size. Give it a week or two. It looks better across browsers/platforms.
hah! I thought maybe it was just my computer changing the font size. but when I saw the comments at the top…I was sure it wasn’t me.
I’m not a fan of the larger font either, but perhaps that’s because I only have a little macbook. I’m sure on a hug imac it looks nice.

I recently moved to Knoxville only 4 months ago and your pictures have been kind of a scavenger hunt for me, as I drive through town I look for the pictures you took. I am going to start asking around about the round windows.
i’m sort of thinking that there’s some resemblance to a Mississippi steamboat, the font on the front, the lattice-like stuff in the windows, the railings, etc… maybe there’s a theme happening there?
I love this building — definitely has a western flair to it.
I’ve never been to Knoxville, but you are making me take a more critical look at the architectural details I see in the places I do visit.
