I Don’t Know Why I’m So Twitchy

December 19th, 2008

Or look so constipated. I was a wee bit nervous. The ladies of the Momversation have been kicking ass with this project. The people at Momversation asked the husbands (me, Brian, Hal and Mark to do a video about what it’s like to have a wife who publishes online and some of the issues that arise. Surprisingly, we did not talk about bowel movements, erections or sports:

We need to do more group. Thanks, guys!

Be gentle, dear internet. o

Not bad, considering the medium. Those of us who have seen you present live know you’re crippled without a slideshow and the ability to gesture.

  2. doow says:

I like it – it’s just like one from the ladies, only a few octaves lower. But Jon, were you sitting on your hands? As a fellow wild gesturer I was surprised by the lack of flailing limbs as you were talking.

  3. blurb says:

Thanks. I was trying to tone it down a bit. No bourbon.

Also, I’ve got some CSS/admin work to do to get the comment reply stuff working. Coming soon™!

  4. Dawn says:

Are you kidding?!?!??? That was fabulous! You’re a rockstar on camera.

  5. leesavee says:

Dawn’s right — you are a rockstar. And the twitchiness you feel is probably from the “behind the counter but over the counter” allergy medicine you’ve been taking. It’s almost-meth!

So, did anyone read about Bristol Palin’s mother-in-law getting arrested? Some blogs are saying there may have been meth-making involved, but who knows?

  6. southerngirl says:

Totally loved it. You guys were honest, funny, and insightful. And, Jon, your bourbon line was the most insightful of all, although I would have said tequila.

    Kudos to all you guys.

  7. southerngirl says:

Jon, I miss your political posts!!!! What do you think about Rick Warren at Obama’s inauguration?

  8. Kristan says:

To be honest, I find this more interesting than the regular momversations… Usually they’re just talking about stuff they talk about on their blogs anyway, but for me, this is new insight, a new perspective, new voices. Very cool!

  9. Nice job, guys. I enjoyed that … especially the part that dealt with blogging about your children. Lots of varying answers from each of you.

I do a lot of writing about, and posting photos of, my kids, my comfort level with which continues to fluctuate. I’m more comfortable with it now that my blog is relatively anonymous; my previous blog wasn’t, and that just started to feel like too much of a security risk (I’m an ex-military police K-9 handler, and also neurotic and paranoid by nature, so I’m probably more sensitive than most about the safety aspect).

For instance: we’re headed to Philly for Christmas with the in-laws next week, and I won’t have to feel like I’m posting a Burglarize-Us ad on the Internet if I make it known that we’re away for the week.

OK, enough of my rambling. Thanks for sharing the video.

Jon, You did a great job. You have nothing to worry about. I hope that have the GUYS do move momversations. It is great to hear things from male point of view also.

Also, Congrats again on Heather’s pregnancy. You are both great parents and I look forward to hearing more from both you and Heather as your family grows.

    Merry Christmas.

  11. tuna says:

That was fun to watch. Funny – my husband has also complained that he learned new things about me via my blog, so it was nice to see someone address that. It is kind of weird. And the bit about protecting the kids was interesting, too, because there’s no real “standard” out there yet.

And either you’re going to be up for an Oscar, or you really, really, really, REALLY love your wife. Just the look on your face when you’re talking about how proud you are of her, it’s so sweet.

  12. davemac says:

…”we did not talk about bowel movements, erections or sports”

Then I’m not watching it. :-P

  13. Lesley says:

I hope husbandversation or dadversation or whatever you want to call it continues. You came across thoughtful, serious, and also amused.

Also, yes re the bourbon. (and no editing!)

Re the wife groping. I thought that was a big compliment to you when Heather wrote it. Also, it sounded like an expression of affection, not just sexual.

  14. Maiken says:

Bravo! Upon briefly meeting you at Heather’s book signing I realized had almost no idea the depth of you as a person (separate of and along side Heather). I remember an interview later where you mentioned how much work Heather puts into writing a post, and how gifted she is a crafting those stories. I then put it together that my interpretation of Heather’s story was so far removed from who you were upon seeing you face to face.

I would say that perhaps being open to letting the gestures be as they are wont to be is charming. Abundant gesturing, to me, is when there is so much fire/passion/emotion/what have you that you are bursting to share and your body can hardly such pure joy.

  15. Amanda says:

    You kicked ass. *applause*

  16. Mr Furious says:

    Nicely done, men.

One thing it seems none of you have to contend with is a blogging wife who started her blog as a spin-off of your own, stole your name and then promptly began kicking your ass all over the internet, like mine has.

    [sniff]

Actually I’m quite proud, and we’re not really covering the same ground in our writing, so it’s not usually a problem. Occasionally her forays into MY family (in-law stuff) has gotten dicey—not between us, but with my parents and siblings.

Otherwise? Go for it, Mrs F.

  17. rutis says:

You guys were all fabulous! The twitchyness tapered off at the end. I hope you all do another segment.

  18. lpageschalow says:

    Jon,

phenomenal job….eloquent and funny! I like the approach of involving the husbands, it makes for a true (yet just as awesome) contrast to “the moms”….

Keep up the great work and the awesome content! You, Heather and Leta ROCK!

[ed. note: please don't include your blog link in comments!]

  19. wumples says:

Aww! It’s always really heartwarming to see guys talk about just how much they care about they’s wimmens! Honestly – when you mention how stressful the blog is for Dooce and that you wish you could help? Sweetest moment on momversation yet. Uh-oh. I think you just won a girl award. :p

  20. irishembi says:

You know I think the twitchy constipated thing gives it a real and unrehearsed vibe. Besides I hear twitchy and constipated is all the rage these days. :-)

As for the bowel movements and erections, the women (women in general, not just your women) are busy talking about them. Sports too even assuming we’re talking Steelers Football.
