Our Furry Stoic

January 13th, 2009

The dog will sit like this for hours. Definitely Basenji.

Best part of that Wikipedia entry:

“In behavior and temperament they have some traits in common with cats.”

I don’t think Chuck is entirely Basenji. He sheds. He was well socialized and wants to say hello to everybody.

Chuck is a registered Democrat. o

I was also under the impression that Basenjis were a good bit smaller than Chuck is as well. I really wanted to get one, but couldn’t find a local breeder back when I was hunting for a dog.

Chuck and my dog (Artie) look eerily alike, although Chuck has longer legs. My dog is a Lab/Corgi mix — the face of a Lab (Artie’s face looks just like Chuck’s) but with a Corgi’s short legs (Artie’s legs are just a tad shorter than my own).

I wonder now if Artie’s a Basenji/Corgi mix, if you think Chuck is part Basenji, seeing as they really could be twins.

But don’t Basenjis usually (always?) have sticky-uppy ears? Chuck’s ears don’t stand up. Neither do Artie’s. Maybe they’re brothers from another mother, and have created their own breed of Gorgeous…

This made me laugh… like a lot.

    This is Taffy.

I’ve always thought she resembled Chuck a good deal in appearance and temperament. Although sadly she lacks the ability to balance anything on her head. She’s really good about letting us stick things over her face though.

Anyway, I digress. My point being, funny you mention Basenji, as I had a trainer/breeder tell me once she thought Taffy was part Basenji based on her odd habit of “singing”.

You’ve never mentioned, do Chuck’s talents also extend toward the musical?

  5. Polly says:

wow. perhaps he is a dat. or a cog.

and i love how the video camera had some lensbaby stylings. cool.

  6. J. Bo says:

Well, OF COURSE Chuck is a registered Democrat. His spotless congressional voting record is all the evidence we need.

For newbies like me (only reading for a couple years now…) how about the back story on Chuck? Where did you and Dooce adopt him? Was he a pup? Shelter dog? How long has he served in Congress? Thanks!

I love these. You should know that my daughter LOVES you. She begs to see all the videos that you are in/talking. She says, “Jon is SO FUNNY!” and she breaks down in giggles.
I had to pull out the maps today because she wanted to know if we could come visit you. I told her we couldn’t since we live in Atlanta and you guys live in Utah. Not to mention the whole internet stalking issues. :)

  9. Lesley says:

Please make Chuck press conferences a regular feature.

    a) His expression says: Must not move ears as these could be trick questions.
    b) Also: If I sit very still, will Jon give me bacon?

(You weren’t holding bacon were you?)

    Mwah Chuck!

It was actually cool to see some hint of movement from Chuck…usually he looks like a statue in the photos :)

  11. J. Bo says:

    Kats Mom, if I may…

Heather posted Chuck’s adoption story here (and it’s GREAT):

    http://www.dooce.com/archives/daily/10_27_2004.html

I’m not entirely clear on the details of the Former Congressman’s political ascent and retirement; we’ll have to wait for Jon to provide further information there.

    • blurb says:

The lawyers have requested we not discuss Chuck’s past political life at this time. :-(

It is public knowledge that there was an intern involved.

  12. Maura says:

While I got a kick out of the interview footage, and am intrigued by Chuck’s stoic facade, what I really enjoyed was the picture of him as a puppy over at the adoption story post. OMG. I’m already suffering from “I want a dog” pangs, and that picture put me one step closer to the edge.

  13. Amanda says:

Chuck is an amazing dog. My dogs? Well intentioned abominations of nature, who have eaten a portion of the siding off of the back of the house.

    They are eating our house!

  14. Lesley says:

Hey Jon, I just hopped over to your videos and watched the Edamame one and want to know what is the music during the closing credits? I didn’t see it listed and it’s great.

  15. Lesley says:

Ugh, sorry, just read through the comments and found your message re the music. My apologies.

  16. Kristan says:

    God I love Chuck.

And hey, he DOES look a bit Basenji!

  17. weezgrrl says:

While Chuck is eternally awesome, I’m struck by the footage in regards to the photography of it… may I ask what video camera you are using??

  18. tori says:

Have you thought about having Chuckles DNA tested?

A simple cheek swab test would tell you exactly what he is.

    http://www.dog-dna.com

They offer the test kit and you just swab and send it in. It’s 120 bucks, which is spendy but it could put all the speculation to rest.
