It Sucked and Then I Cried: Launch Day and a Touch of the Schmoop

March 24th, 2009

it sucked and then I cried

In the winter of 2002 and again in 2003, I saw today. I saw that Heather would, if she chose, be a published author. In 2004, she really hit her stride and her talent has blossomed. She works very hard to publish good things and make people smile every day. Four years ago in 2005, before I quit the day job, Heather started working on a manuscript outline to shop to publishers. All of that is in the past now and I’m thrilled at the job that Simon Spotlight has done to get this book out there.

Today, I’m bursting with pride and love for her as It Sucked and Then I Cried hits the streets. We’ve been through a lot since the process started, but we’re alive, together and happy (but tired).

Heather, you are the most talented person I’ve ever known. Matched with your astounding work ethic, you deserve every bit of praise and success. I’m flattered that you chose me to make this journey. I’m flattered to know you and I hope that this success continues for all the hard work and personal sacrifices you have endured to make it happen.

Take care of yourself on the road, baby!

To you, dear readers, thank you for your support. I thank you every day and today is no exception. Your support of Heather and our business endeavors over the years has been nothing short of astounding. You helped make this happen. o

  1. Congratulations to you both.
Got my copy in the mail already. Looking forward to clipping on a booklight and digging in.

Congratulations! You must be so excited that its DONE! I just finished reading it tonight and I loved it. Like like she does in her blog, she make me laugh, cry, blush, and keep turning pages until the very end. I am proud of what you guys have accomplished.

Oh, and my husband is a long time fan of Swim Hirschil Swim. He had a beat up t-shirt around here somewhere in the band name on it. Wonder where that ended up…

Awwww…Jon, I just love your schmoop! Heather is a lucky lady to have you, and you are lucky to have her. Schmoop it up, dears!

  3. OptimusKitty says:

Just registered so I could tell you that I enjoy Dooce and Blurbomat tremendously, and it makes me happy to see both of you succeed personally and professionally. Call me selfish, but the more successful you two are, the more happiness and laughter you can continue to bring me each day. :-)

  4. tracy says:

Jon, your shmoopiness made my eyes well up with tears. You’re an awesome husband.

I was thrilled to not only find one copy of Heather’s book in our teeny little bookstore downtown. but the proprietor even knew of the book & its exact title ~ after I spaced it & couldn’t remember.

I’ve already skimmed through it, and if I weren’t at work, I’d be sitting with a cup of coffee & devouring every single word. I cannot wait to meet her in person at Powell’s, although I’ll likely geek out & make a total fool of myself :)

  5. meowsk says:

Just got back from picking up my copy. Now it is sitting on my desk threatening to distract me from work. But alas I must wait until I get home to begin reading. Congratulations! You are both major inspirations to me – keep up the amazing work.

  6. doow says:

Happy schmooping. I look forward to getting my copy through the post. A whole book’s worth of Heather seems like a great treat.
Well done to Heather – and indeed to the whole Blurbodoocery.

  7. DeeAnne says:

Your schmoop didn’t suck but it did make me cry. What a wonderful and supportive guy you are! Heather is so very lucky!

I have already booked the day when Heather comes to town so I caan meet her!

  8. Krys says:

You two make a loverly couple and I can’t wait to read Heather’s new book! I was going to try to make it into the city today, but that’s just not happening – work sucks and I’m tied to my desk chair!
What a nice post for you to put out there – it’s very heartwarming to us to see how much you both love each other!

  9. duhneese says:

    congratulations!

it’s a pleasure reading you both. will you be joining heather on the road at all?

  10. kiki says:

oh my goodness, i am all choked up. thanks for being such a supportive husband; they seem to be few and far between. she is so lucky to have you in her life!

  11. knolting says:

Congratulations to Heather (and to you)! I’ve been reading both of your blogs for a few years now and I can’t wait to pick up a copy of the book. I wish you both continued success. It is well deserved.

  12. Kristan says:

    Goshdarnit, you made me cry…

I’m glad you’re not schmoopy all the time, but I’m also glad you’re not afraid to be schmoopy — especially on TEH INTERNETS — because it’s beautiful to see a couple who is so obviously and deeply in love. Gives the rest of us hope, you know?

And of course, congrats to Heather. My friend is going to her book signing in Austin for me, so I’ll have a copy soon! :)

  13. aingman says:

I ordered the book on Amazon today (along with a 48 pack of Seventh Generation TP)! So excited for all the success!

  14. bberburb says:

    Congratulations to all of you.

Can’t tell you how cool it was to download the book onto my Kindle and start reading it. I sent a pic to dooce.

While I am probably not the target audience for the book, I have been following both sites for many years.

    Barry

  15. This is so cool! Congratulations to both of you for all the hard work that it took to get here. Can’t wait to get my copy!

  16. Amanda says:

    I love schmoop. Congrats guys!

  17. Yolanda says:

I love how much you love each other. It’s part of what keeps me coming to your sites. 2009 is some year. A hearty congratulations.

  18. You always say the things I wished a man would say to me, you 2 are amazing. Do you have a brother I can have? :-)

  19. kim at allconsuming says:

I’m just so very happy for you both. In that stupid goofy kind of happy way where you just smile like a loon at the computer screen and think about how you guys are faring and how exciting it will be when the baby arrives and how gorgeous Leta’s eyes are and how incomprehensibly long Heather’s arms are and … well then I realise that I’m just getting creepy.

Jog it in guys, jog it in on a road well travelled.

Now, next project, the Armstrong Arrival.

  20. It has been an honour following her progress all these years!

    VP

p.s. Amazon has just sent me an e-mail saying that the book has been despatched YAY!

  21. J. Bo says:

I’m trying to coerce MY schmoop to meet Heather in Chicago and get me an autographed book from Heather’s own fine (if pregnancy-puffed) hand… but I’m having a tough time of it: he says if Chuck’s not there, HE’S NOT GOING.

(We have some geographic and support issues to work out, I realize…)

ANYWAY… congratulations to all at the Blurbodoocery, and I wish Heather greatest success with her book-baby. Here’s to many more!

  22. nobody says:

A dream realized makes everyone braver. Good show.

  23. Kristan says:

Not related, but OMG RYAN SEACREST JUST SAID “CROWNS”!! I thought you and Heather would want to know. Well, Heather would want to know, and you should be prepared for the inevitable gloating…

  24. irishembi says:

You do good schmoop. :-) Congratulations to both of you. Heather’s a brilliant writer and so are you Jon. I enjoy reading both of your writing.

  25. jdiettrich says:

If I mail it to you guys, will you both sign it? Heck, Leta can even write in it!
