Grotto Trees – Zion National Park

Spring in Zion National Park is crazy green. The light in the afternoon does amazing things to the new leaves. The ambient orange light from the canyon walls and formations has something to do with it as well.

This shot was taken after completing Angel’s Landing as I waited for the shuttle back to the park entrance. The green leaves were surreal in their color, especially against the tree trunks and branches. As I pressed the shutter release, I was struck that this color, like autumn colors, only lasts a short time. I felt lucky to see it and even luckier that I was able to grab this frame.

I like that if you start at the top of the image and look down, you don’t get a proper sense of scale until your eye hits the picnic tables. Those tables change the image in great ways.
