The rococo is over the top fantastic in the apse of the neo-Gothic revival Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal. Perhaps the modern equivalent is 3D IMAX with the brightest projector ever invented. But that doesn’t even come close to the socio-economic statement of wealth, power and sheer marketing power of this church.
One thing I didn’t realize is that the church’s designation of basilica happened in 1982 by Pope John Paul II. I thought it was an architectural designation and not a holy one.
