The title is a reference to this movie, which I have not seen. o

Jon Armstrongs

February 20th, 2008

I did a podcast interview with Jon Armstrong (not me). He is the owner of jonarmstrong.com and interviews another Jon Armstrong (also not me) as well. People have often asked me if I’ve written a book or changed careers and started doing magic. I have not.

You can hear the interview on Jon Armstrong’s podcast blog if you’re just joining us:
If You’re Just Joining Us » Blog Archive » The High Ranking Google Jon Armstrongs

The Jon Armstrong who interviewed me is the first result on Google and is a science fiction author (on Amazon) as well as a great podcaster. I wonder how many people with same name spellings would find so many similarities. This was a great idea and I’m hoping others out there will find their online namesakes and see what’s up. This is the kind of thing the internet is perfect for.

It’s more than a little weird to hear three Jon Armstrongs, especially if you are one of them. We all appear to like to talk. o

Tank

As with most of the shots from this shoot, I caught the light at a perfect time of day and haven’t done much processing on any of these.

Senator Absent at NAACP Meeting

February 19th, 2008

It appears he is afraid of the media. Best part is toward the end at about 1:45:

Also from the Mormon-owned station.

Salt Lake Tribune story here.

Touchy Mormons have wondered why I’m including Mr. Buttars religion at all in my writings about this issue. I believe we’ll see more of this kind of ignorance in the future not less if the church remains silent. I believe that is what can be expected when a dominate culture is fed ignorance for decades. Racism is ignorance. Bigotry is ignorance. That more people aren’t clamoring publicly, that the media outlets are standing back and choosing their language far more carefully than Mr. Buttars has (twice now!) says so much about a culture that has been shaped with a heavy pair of hands by one party and one church. I call out the church because here is a brilliant chance to take a stand. I know the church will probably not comment, but how great would it be if it did? Wouldn’t you want whatever organization you belong to to stand up against hate speech?

The irony is that Mr. Buttars and his supporters are now trying to make Buttars the victim. Typical conservative tactics. o

UPDATE: From the Mormon owned paper. Best bit from the candy ass GOP Salt Lake County chair:

“Salt Lake County Republican Party Chairman James Evans said that Buttars’ comments, including his recent reference to lynching, were not racist.

“‘It is a ‘hate lynch mob,’ Evans said, echoing Buttars’ words.

“‘People decide who’s a racist and who’s not based on their agenda,’ Evans said. ‘This is a political agenda to silence a white, conservative male … race is being used as a weapon to undermine Sen. Buttars’ effectiveness.’”

The poor, white conservative male defense. Give me a break.

More From Utah’s Racist Senator

February 19th, 2008

Deseret Morning News | Buttars says he’ll run for re-election in November

Buttars strikes back: Senator says critics have become a ‘hate lynch mob’

He keeps it up with the racially charged language. Here’s his justification:

“It was a bad statement, but the statement as I used it had nothing to do with human beings, certainly not a black human being.”

Right. Not a black baby human at all. So what kind of black baby are you referring to, Senator?

Utah doesn’t know how to deal with something like this because of the hegemony of the Republican party, the legitimization of hate speech and thought by the predominant religion and lack of strong moral leadership from elected officials. And this from the party who claims to support “family values”.

P.S. Mormons who defend this guy: you aren’t making a very good case for yourself or your religion. This has nothing to do with political correctness. It has to do with political hate. I don’t hate Mr. Buttars. But a guy with such outdated views should at the very least be censured and voted out. 10th District, you don’t look so good, either. o

Slightly Duck Bill-ish Pipe

February 19th, 2008

Part of the oil machinery out in the desert near Duchesne, Utah. The decayed insulation is awesome.

I could probably camp out and shoot this stuff for days, it’s so full of texture. o

Oil Thing

February 18th, 2008

Taken out in the desert near Duchesne, Utah. Since the price of oil has risen so much over the past couple of years, the drills and pumps are still operating. It’s kind of weird to see these lonely machines slowly pulling oil out of the earth out in the middle of nowhere.

I love the dirty texture the oil residue adds. o

The Silence is Saying So Much More

February 16th, 2008

Salt Lake Tribune - Buttars is lying low in aftermath

Governor still silent. GOP seems fine with a racist in the Utah Senate. Mormons as individuals speaking up, Mormon church is silent. They are hoping this will go away. o

Utah’s Republican Governor Enjoys Coddling Racist Senator

February 15th, 2008

I can’t believe this isn’t getting more attention. I’ve been busy having my head zapped and my nostrils prodded and haven’t linked to this:

Salt Lake Tribune - NAACP: Buttars should quit over ‘black’ baby comment; Gov. says let voters decide

Main story:

Salt Lake Tribune - Buttars’ racial slur leads to rebuke, apology

From the Mormon-owned paper:
Deseret Morning News | Buttars apologizes for potentially racist comment (nice use of “potentially”)

No one is acting well in this debacle. Governor Huntsman needs to take a stand. The Utah Senate and legislature needs to take a stand. The citizenry need to take a stand, particularly those who elected this nutburger. GOP thinking and acting at its worse.

Sen. Buttars is a stain on the state and a puppet of the fundamentalist right wing machinery that thrives in Utah. Further, it seems to thrive on hate, ignorance and intolerance. That Buttars hasn’t resigned over these comments or been censured in any way is a huge liability for the mainstream culture in Utah. o

They Want You to Waste It - The “Right” Way to Spray Nasonex Nasal Spray

February 15th, 2008

The Right Way To Spray NASONEX Nasal Spray

This is not exactly how my doctor told me how to do it. I’m thinking it’s because they are an evil pharmaceutical, purposefully driving up costs to users. Then I take the tin foil off.

Here’s my description of what my ENT doc told me:

1) Pre-nostril spray, make sure pump is primed to deliver the right dosage. You want a good squirt, not a half-squirt. This means you pump the thing a couple of times to get it ready.

2) Tilt head WAY forward. Look to Australia if you are in the Northern hemisphere, Alaska if you are in the Southern hemisphere.

3) Insert tip into a nostril and point it slightly toward OUTER wall of nose. One spray. Do not inhale.

4) Keep head down for 30 seconds. Your nose might drip. If your cilia are working properly, they will move the medicine through the nasal passage and distribute the medicine. Cilia rule, apparently.

5) Repeat for other nostril.

Wait 15 minutes and do it again.

After a couple of weeks, one shot per nostril should do the trick.

The explanation for this was that the medicine is designed to be absorbed by nasal tissue, not digestive tissue, so if you inhale it to draw it further back into the sinus area, you lose most of it down your throat and don’t get the right dosage to the right area of your body. Good luck and your mileage may vary. o
