Preservation Hall

Love this sign. Yes, it’s almost a requisite shot from a tourist perspective, but the texture was too good to pass up. This image shows off the depth of field of the 85mm, while retaining a quicker shutter speed in low light with a very usable ISO setting.

I think this sign has extra significance for me as a high school band nerd. Watching from the back of the room at the beginning of the hour as everybody opened their cases and assembled their instruments was always something that struck me as crazy; 100 teenagers willingly putting together their gear without too much fuss in order to sit and listen to the trombone section play four bars about 80 times and then, if we were lucky, playing an Earth, Wind and Fire song.

Plus, the letterforms are imprecise and awesome. So bonus on type nerd front as well as the texture front. While the Preservation Hall is undoubtedly a tourist attraction, the patina and texture are something art directors the world over strive to recreate. It’s like a warm, rusty bath of distressed texture. I eat this up.
